Nylon: The fiber that revolutionized the industry

Nylon is a synthetic polymer belonging to the group of polyamides. His discovery in the form of fiber quickly unseated the silk of the textile market. Nylon fiber is elastic and resistant, properties that are key to making clothes. With the passage of time, the use of nylon as a solid was developed to achieve resistant, durable parts with the right elasticity to cushion blows between parts and support loads.

Nylon is currently used in the vast majority of industry sectors, regardless of the application. For this reason you can find nylon in fishing lines and guitar strings, industrial machinery, food products, zippers, screws, surgery products and many more.

Nylons and nylons composites reinforced with fibers

In the world of 3D printing there are different types of nylons, each with different applications, among which the applications in the automotive industry and in the food sector (nylon FDA) stand out. Among the non-alloyed nylons, one such as PA12 stands out, a polyamide used in automotive, machinery and industry since it combines mechanical resistance, flexibility and chemical resistance (oils, greases, gasoline...) and superior thermal. Its deformation by traction before breaking is greater than 50 % which makes it one of the filaments with greater resistance to fatigue. The main applications are usually in metal replacement elements, such as bearings, gears, pulleys, sprockets and in industrial machinery for damping.

Reinforced with carbon fiber and glass fiber stand out among fiber-reinforced nylons. The Nylon-Carbon Fiber CF15 is a filament used by the vast majority of users of 3D printing who need to make resistant parts, hard, resistant to wear and with some elasticity. Another material that stands out in this category is the XSTRAND GF30-PA6, a polyamide with 30 % fiberglass that has one of the largest voltage modules of all filaments currently available.
