Essentium offers numerous innovative technical filaments, mostly polymers and blends designed for exceptional strength, flexibility and high mechanical performance in the most challenging industrial settings, including aerospace and defense, automotive, biomedical, contract manufacturing, consumer goods, and electronic manufacturing. One of the materials from the Essentium portfolio is the Essentium PA, based on a BASF formula.

Essentium PA (nylon) is characterized by exceptional strength, durability and stiffness with a slight amount of inherent flex. In addition to these qualities, Essentium PA exhibits great resistance to abrasion and cuts, which makes the parts 3D printed with it "nearly indestructible" according to the manufacturer. As is typical of nylon filaments, the Essentium PA also demonstrates excellent resistance to fuels, solvents and hydrocarbons.

These excellent mechanical and chemical properties of the Essentium PA in combination with its great behavior in abrasive environments make this filament ideal for applications where the 3D printed part will be subjected to constant and prolonged wear, hostile chemicals and continuous mechanican strain. Some potential applications for Essentium PA are mechanisms, low-friction bearings, thrust washers or automotive parts in general.

The recommended printing temperature for the Essentium PA filament is 245-265 ºC and the optimal bed temperature is 85-100 ºC. It is advised to print this filament on a 3D printer with a closed chamber (20-25 ºC) if possible in order to prevent the part from warping due to temperature differences. The manufacturer recommends printing this material on a glass surface with some kind of adhesion solution applied, for example Magigoo PA or Kapton Tape. The user should always wear protective equipment when handling the Essentium PA filament and the printing environment should be properly ventilated.

Nylon is a hygroscopic material, which means that if it is not stored correctly, it will absorb moisture from the environment. This will lead to failed prints, extrusion issues and surface imperfections on the 3D printed part. In order to avoid those complications, the Essentium PA filament should be stored in a dry environment, preferably in a sealed bag with a desiccant capsule, in a vacuum sealed container or a drying case. If the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried, for example in the PrintDry filament dryer.
