Treed Filaments, an Italian manufacturer of 3D printing products, has an extensive catalogue of materials for FDM/FFF 3D printing. Within this manufacturer's extensive catalogue, its filaments aimed at sectors such as architecture and art or high-performance technical filaments for industry stand out.

Nylon Carbonio is a PA (Polyamide/Nylon) based filament reinforced with carbon fibre (not powder). The carbon fibre gives the nylon stiffness, mechanical strength and high temperature resistance, all this together with excellent interlayer bonding.

The vast majority of nylon filaments in the 3D printing market have a high absorption of environmental humidity that ends up causing printing defects and even failed prints, something critical when 3D printing parts for demanding applications. Thanks to its formulation, Treed Filaments' Nylon Carbonio filament stands out from its competitors for being much less hygroscopic, however the manufacturer recommends drying it before use in order to obtain the best possible results.

Nylon Carbonio is specifically developed for the engineering and design fields and is ideal for demanding mechanical applications due to its high tensile modulus of 8000 MPa (ISO 527). In addition, it has a tensile strength of 110 MPa (ISO 527-2). Its density of 1.07 g/cm3 and bending modulus of 7.2 GPa complete the main characteristics that make this filament an exceptional material.

The carbon fibre loading makes Nylon Carbonio a high performance, lightweight and versatile filament that does not deform at high temperatures, improving the mechanical and chemical properties of the base material. Nylon Carbonio is suitable for all desktop FDM 3D printers with a hot bed and is recommended for use with a hardened steel nozzle or wear-resistant inner surface (more information in usage tips).

Developed specifically for 3D printing, Nylon Carbonio provides the best results when the filaments are pre-dried at 75° for 6-10 h or at 105° for 4 h.
for 4 h. This time will increase for spools up to 0.5 kg. The use of the Fiber Three drying case is also recommended against humidity

0.5 mm is the minimum diameter that the nozzle must have to work with reinforced carbon fibres. Carbon fibres are abrasive, so it is advisable to use wear-resistant nozzles (e.g. hardened steel) or nozzles with a resistant inner surface made of ceramic or similar (never Teflon). Good choices are the Olsson Ruby nozzle, the Vanadio nozzle, the hardened steel nozzles from E3D or the tungsten carbide nozzle.

It is also not recommended to leave the filament unused in the nozzle for more than 20 minutes. The clogging of the material in the nozzle is extremely cumbersome when working with this type of material, so the use of a cleaning filament after printing is recommended. This filament removes the residual material that remains inside the extruder and can be applied at the transition between two different materials working at different temperatures, or at the end of printing. The use of this filament ensures a smooth, continuous and clog-free flow and extends the life of the HotEnd.
