About support/soluble materials

Breakaway and soluble support materials are essential components in the realm of 3D printing, providing crucial support structures for complex geometries or features such as overhangs and bridges during the printing process. These support materials come in various variants, including HiPS, PVA, BVOH, as well as support filaments soluble in chemical solvents or water. Additionally, there are specialized support materials tailored for specific polymers, high-temperature applications, sinterable filaments, high-speed printing, fiber-reinforced filaments, and more. The diverse range of support materials available allows users to select the most suitable option based on their printing requirements and desired outcomes.

Considerations

The most effective and convenient way to work with support filaments is with an FDM 3D printers with dual extrusion capabilities. The choice between soluble versus breakaway support filaments depends on several factors such as print complexity, material compatibility, post-processing capabilities, and desired finish quality. Soluble materials are advantageous for complex geometries and intricate designs (cavities, fragile details). The compatibility of the main material with the support filament (printing temperature, mutual adhesion) is as important as the possibility to safely submerge the main part in chemical solvents or water for support dissolution. While breakaway supports are fairly easy to remove with pliers or manually, they may leave behind rough surfaces that require post-processing by polishing or smoothing. Soluble supports, on the other hand, require solvents and ultrasonic baths.
