One of the materials in BASF’s portfolio of engineering filaments is the Ultrafuse ASA filamentASA (acrylic styrene acrylate) is a high performance amorphous thermoplastic that resembles ABS a lot on the molecular level and in its mechanical properties since it was developed in the 1970s as an alternative to ABS. The main structural difference is that ASA contains acrylate rubber instead of butadiene rubber as an impact modifier, which gives ASA ten times the UV resistance of ABS, better heat resistance and higher chemical resistance, as well as overall greater resistance to environmental cracking.

This is precisely the feature that distinguishes ASA - high weathering resistance. It makes ASA ideal for the additive manufacturing of parts that need to be outdoors but not lose their mechanical properties or color/gloss. ASA is widely used in the automotive industry thanks to its resistance to harsh conditions, especially high temperatures and chemicals. It is also a popular material in the manufacturing of outdoor furniture, toys, electrical installations, gutter and drain pipes, or commercial siding for buildings. In 3D printing, ASA is mostly used for general prototyping for parts that need to stand a great amount of impact without breaking.

The Ultrafuse ASA filament is the ideal material for making prototypes but also end use parts with excellent mechanical and thermal behavior. The parts will preserve their dimensional stability, mechanical properties and appearance even in the harshest conditions of use, such as exposure to impacts, cold weather, heat, rain or UV radiation.

ASA is a very versatile 3D printing material and it can be used together with the Ultrafuse HIPS support material to 3D print complex geometries and structures.

The Ultrafuse ASA filament should be printed at 260-280 ºC at a speed of 30-60 mm/s. SInce ASA is quite prone to warping, deformation and cracking caused by sudden temperature changes, it is highly recommended to use a 3D printer with a closed passive chamber, especially for big parts, and to limit the use of the layer fan to minimum. The bed should be heated to a temperature of 100-120 ºC to further avoid deformation. To improve bed adhesion of the Ultrafuse ASA filament to the printing surface, Kapton Tape or an adhesive spray can be used.

In order to ensure the longevity of the Ultrafuse ASA filament and successful prints, the filament should be stored in its original package, with a filament drying capsule for a better effect, or in a vacuum sealed bag or an intelligent filament container. During printing, the spool can be placed in a drying case or an inline filament dryer. If the Ultrafuse ASA filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried in a hot dryer or vacuum oven for 4-16 hours at 60 ºC.
