The BASF Ultrafuse line of filaments for FFF 3D printing not only contains metallic filaments but also standard, engineering, flexible, reinforced, high temperature and support filaments. Among the engineering materials is the Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament made with Polyscope XILOY in collaboration with Polyscope Polymers. Polyscope Polymers are known for their material solutions for the automotive industry, as well as their methods of enhancing polymer behavior with SMA (styrene maleic anhydride).
Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ is a material especially optimized for 3D printing. In addition to all the best properties of ABS, Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ has been modified to have an improved processability when 3D printed. The great step forward with this material is that it can be directly printed on glass without any adhesive solutions such as sprays, glues or tapes. Furthermore, Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ exhibits extremely low warping, which guarantees a higher success rate of prints, with better appearance of the 3D printed part, uniform mechanical properties, less material waste and a more pleasant and efficient 3D printing experience.
In addition to the greatly improved printability, the Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament has many valuable properties inherited from ABS itself. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the second most used material in 3D printing and the go to polymer for engineers and professional applications thanks to its machinability and processability, excellent impact strength, good thermal and chemical resistance, as well as its great adhesion to water-soluble supports. The last property allows for the 3D printing of complex structures and geometries with support structures and later removing those without leaving any marks or imperfections on the part.
The Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ engineering filament is a clever fusion of all the most attractive features of ABS with custom optimizations to make it easier to 3D print than standard ABS. The improved adhesion without the need for adhesion products as well as the reduced warping behavior make the Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament an extremely efficient, strong and resilient material to work with in the engineering environment.
Furthermore, the ABS Fusion+ Ultrafuse filament is compatible with high printing speeds. In order to create complex structures with this material and a support material, the Xioneer VXL 90 soluble support material or the VXL 111 soluble support material are recommended by the manufacturer. These support materials can be extruded at high speeds as well, which means a smooth and efficient 3D printing. The water solubility of VXL 90/111 makes the post-processing more precise and fast. In the Downloads section a table of compatibilities between the BASF Ultrafuse and Xioneer support filaments can be consulted.

Even though the Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament does not require the use of any adhesive products, a small amount of adhesive spray such as 3DLac or DimaFix can be used to protect the glass printing bed.
The recommended support material for the Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament are the Ultrafuse BVOH or Ultrafuse HIPS support filaments. As far as the soluble HIPS support filament, the big support pieces should be removed manually and then the whole part should be placed in a solvent bath to remove the remaining support structures. This way less solvent will be used, making the support removal process more affordable.
The Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ should be stored properly in order to reduce its moisture absorption, detrimental to print quality. The Ultrafuse ABS Fusion+ filament should be stored in a vacuum sealed bag with a filament drying capsule, in an intelligent filament container before and after printing, and in a filament drying device during printing.
The BASF Ultrafuse ABS filament should be extruded at a temperature of 260-280 ºC and a speed of 40-80 mm/s. The temperature of the bed should be set to 100-120 ºC (required). If the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried at 60 ºC in a hot air dryer or a vacuum oven for 8-10 hours.
