TPE-based filament with insulating properties, and resistance to chemicals, heat and UV radiation.

The Spanish filament manufacturer Recreus does not stop surprising with high end materials, especially with new additions to the Filaflex family of elastic polymers. One such addition is the Filaflex SEBS, a low density filament that behaves like rubber without undergoing vulcanization, designed for industrial use. Filaflex SEBS successfully combines the flexibility, strength and durability characteristic of the Filaflex filaments with an excellent finish (high level of detail and soft touch), insulating properties, waterproofness, and chemical, thermal and UV resistance. The Filaflex SEBS is available in natural and black, in spools of 600 and 2500 g, in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm diameters.

Filaflex SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) has a Shore hardness of 90A, which is comparable to the hardness of a shoe heel or a shopping cart wheel. Filaflex SEBS can be successfully flexed and bent back to its original shape, and it is resistant to impact and fatigue. All these features, combined with the chemical, thermal and moisture resistance, make it an ideal material for the 3D printing of industrial outdoor use parts that need to absorb vibrations and stay elastic even when exposed to high temperatures, rain, elevated humidity, UV radiation, oil, fuel, solvents, salt water and autoclave cycles. Thanks to this set of outstanding properties, Filaflex SEBS can be used as an alternative to PVC (vinyl).

The possible applications for the Filaflex SEBS filament are countless, from industrial applications (seals, gaskets, belts, straps, anti-vibration mounts, protectors, anti-slip systems), through the automotive industry (holders, soft-touch finishes, waterproof seals, protectors, floor mats), household appliances and footwear, to sporting goods (masks, pedals, watertight seals or fins for diving, pole grips for skiing).

Parts with Filaflex SEBS

The Filaflex SEBS filament is very easy to 3D print as it adheres very well to the build plate and, thanks to its moisture resistance, does not leave any threads. Despite being a flexible material, it is compatible with Bowden extrusion systems. When 3D printed with supports, the Filaflex SEBS filament proves easy to work with yet again, and facilitates smooth support removal. The final result is an elastic and impact resistant part with an excellent surface finish, and a range of advanced properties that make it suitable for use in very demanding industrial conditions and harsh environments.

The Filaflex SEBS filament should be extruded at a temperature of 240-260 ºC, at 20-40 mm/s, on a bed heated to around 50-60 ºC. The recommended layer fan setting is 0-20 % but setting it to 0 % will improve adhesion.

Recreus recommends setting the retraction speed to 40-60 mm/s (at a distance of 2-3 mm) and the flow value to 100 %. The Filaflex SEBS filament is characterized by good adhesion to the build plate. Nevertheless, adhesion can be further improved by Increasing the width of the first layer by 5-10 %, using the “brim” setting of 10-20 lines, or using adhesion lacquer or adhesive tape such as Kapton tape (especially for small parts).

In order to prevent the Filaflex SEBS filament from absorbing moisture from the surroundings, it should be stored in a vacuum sealed bag with a filament drying capsule, in an intelligent filament container or in a filament drying case. Failing to properly store the Filaflex SEBS filament will result in extrusion problems and failed 3D prints.

The fumes produced during the extrusion of the Filaflex SEBS filament should not be inhaled. If the user’s 3D printer does not have an air filtration system, external air purifiers such as Zimpure 2 or breathing equipment should be used.
