Kuraray is the world's largest producer of PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol), a company founded in 1924 in Tokyo (Japan). Its products stand out for being polymers soluble in cold water (PVA), which maintain their shape without problems in environments with a relative humidity less than 50%. In addition, since it does not contain solvents in its formulation, it is 100% biodegradable, recyclable and compostable. These properties make Kuraray's PVOH ideal for paper and ceramic adhesives, packaged items and especially food packaging. As always, Kuraray is at the forefront in all fields of the industry, coming to 3D printing FFF / FDM with its soluble filament Mowiflex 3D 2000.

The Mowiflex 3D 2000 (PVOH) is a filament soluble in cold water, white (colorless) and odorless with properties superior to most PVA filaments on the market.

The Mowiflex 3D 2000 (PVOH) is a thermoplastic material soluble in cold water based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). Its excellent solubility in cold water is totally contrary to the absorption power of the humidity of the atmosphere, giving a great tranquility to the users of this filament when it is stored once the coil is started. The Mowiflex 3D 2000 presents a greater structural rigidity than other support filaments (PVA), greatly favoring the transfer of material from the extruder to the HotEnd (especially in Extruder Bowden system) and allows for more solid supports that improve the final surface finish of the piece. In addition, the use of the PVOH Mowiflex 3D 2000 filament as a water-soluble support material allows 3D printing of complex structures, even those containing moving parts, in one piece and with high quality.

This PVOH filament improves the experience that many users have had with the PVA. In comparison, the Mowiflex 3D 2000 has a flow rate almost 4 times higher than PVA and halves dissolving time in water. But undoubtedly, the property that makes this PVOH filament stand out over the PVA, is the power of adhesion to the PLA, reaching twice as much.

Users who have a 3D printer with a double extruder (For example: BCN3D Sigma or Sigmax), can enjoy this filament in combination with PLA, PVB, PATPU or PETG (specialized users have managed to realize supports for ABS), with great ease thanks to the simple printing configuration of the Mowiflex 3D 2000 (extrusion temperature: 190 - 215 ºC, base temperature: 25 - 70 ºC, printing speed: 20 - 50 mm/s). Once the printing is finished, the support structure dissolves easily in water, which thanks to being biodegradable can be discharged through the normal wastewater sinks without problem.

Manipulation and storage:

The Mowiflex 3D 2000 is a filament soluble in cold water, which makes it inherently sensitive to moisture. Kuraray used all his knowledge to make this material less sensitive to moisture and thanks to this, it can be used in an environment with a relative humidity less than 50% for several days or weeks without problem. However, if not used, the Mowiflex 3D 2000 filament (PVOH) should be stored in an aluminum bag with a moisture-tight seal with a desiccant bag or in a vacuum pack for filaments, which ensures 100% that the filament does not absorb environmental humidity. In the event that a quantity of moisture in the harmful filament is detected, it is recommended to introduce the filament into the PrintDry filament dryer at 45 °C for 4 hours.

Print Settings:

The Mowiflex 3D 2000 is sensitive to overheating, so it is recommended that the temperature of the nozzle does not exceed 225 ° C. During printing with the main material, the extruder of the support material is inactive, the temperature of the nozzle of the support material must be below 170 °C. To ensure optimal adhesion to the main print material, it is recommended to use a reduced print speed for the interface layers. The following table shows the printing parameters recommended by Kuraray, within which are the optimal printing parameters for each 3D printer and software.

  • Nozzle temperature: 190 - 225 ºC
  • Base temperature: 25 - 70 ºC
  • Print speed: 20 - 50 mm/s
  • Print speed of the interface: 10 - 20 mm/s

Dissolution:

To dissolve the support structure in water as quickly as possible, it is recommended to use a stirred water tank, manually enough, with a slightly elevated water temperature (30-40 °C). The Mowiflex 3D 2000 will also dissolve at room temperature and without agitation, but the solution will be slower. Subsequently, the solution can be eliminated without problems through normal wastewater systems, due to the biodegradable nature of polyvinyl alcohol. For the elimination of large quantities, local regulations must be taken into account.
