Composite based on ASA and aramid fibers, ideal for impact- and UV-resistant parts.

The ASA Kevlar filament by Spectrum Filaments is a composite material based on ASA copolymer reinforced with 10 % of aramid fibres. This combination grants the resulting ASA Kevlar high resistance to weather conditions and chemical resistance typical of ASA and incredible strength and impact/damage resistance thanks to the aramid fibers.

Aramid fibres, also known as Kevlar, are used to manufacture highly damage-resistant items such as bulletproof vests, helmets and speaker membranes. Unlike glass or carbon fibers, aramid fibres do not fracture easily under stress. The addition of aramid fibers also helps reduce material shrinkage when printing, making it possible to produce large-scale models (heated chamber recommendeed to reduce warping). The ASA Kevlar filament is also characterized by perfect bonding between layers and produces parts with a beautiful and slightly rough matte surface finish (due to the aramid fibers).

Another valuable feature of the ASA Kevlar filament is that it is not as abrasive as filaments reinforced with carbon or glass fibers, thus helping reduce the overall production costs. Nevertheless, an abrasion resistant nozzle should still be used with this filament in order to ensure proper and smooth extrusion and good surface quality of parts 3D printed with the ASA Kevlar filament.

Thanks to its excellent thermomechanical properties and resistance to weathering and chemicals, the ASA Kevlar filament is ideal for the 3D printing of parts with sunlight resistance and high impact strength, such as vehicle bumpers or other protective elements that are going to be used outdoors in harsh conditions. ASA Kevlar is also perfect for the manufacturing of functional prototypes, production tooling and jigs and fixtures.

Once opened, ASA Kevlar filament must be stored properly to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air. Filament is best stored in a hermetically sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum-sealed container or in a smart filament container.

The manufacturer recommends printing ASA Kevlar filament at 240-270 °C on a bed heated to 80-100 °C. It is recommended to print at a speed of 30-70 mm/s with the layer fan on. It is recommended to use a 3D printer with a closed chamber for larger prints. In case of adhesion problems, products such as MagigooDimaFix or 3DLac can be applied to the printing bed.

Since the ASA Kevlar filament contains aramid fibers, it is necessary to use an abrasion-resistant nozzle such as a hardened steel nozzle, a Vanadium nozzle, a tungsten carbide nozzle or a ruby tip nozzle, with a diameter of at least 0.4 mm.

It is strongly recommended to use standard safety equipment during printing and post-processing of 3D printed parts with ASA Kevlar filament: safety goggles, gloves, breathing apparatus and protective clothing as required.
