The PLA Wood filament is Nanovia's second addition to their biocomposite filament portfolio alongside the Nanovia PLA Flax. PLA Wood is a composite material for FFF 3D printing, based on PLA with 45 % of up-cycled pine wood powder from fallen trees in the French Landes region. The PLA Wood was created in collaborative project between Saint-Honoré Paris and Nanovia. PLA Wood is not only biosourced but also biodegradable (in industrial conditions), and to make the filament even more sustainable, both the box and the spool are made from recycled cardboard, with laser-engraved information to limit the use of ink.
When extruded, the PLA Wood filament emits a strong pine wood scent. The appearance of the 3D printed parts resembles wood, light brown and dotted. The textured surface is perfect for the 3D printing of unique interior decorations and wood-imitating objects, toys, statues, etc. Just like real wood, parts 3D printed with the Nanovia PLA Wood filament can be stained and varnished thanks to the wood powder’s porosity and high concentration.
The PLA Wood filament is easy to work with since it extrudes just like standard PLA, at a temperature of 210-230 ºC on a bed heated to 60-70 ºC. Although PLA Wood does not require the use of a heated chamber, it can be printed on an enclosed 3D printer (20 ºC). Printing with PLA Wood does not require a réinforced nozzle but one with a diameter of minimum 0.5 mm is highly recommended.

The Nanovia PLA Wood filament is delivered in a vacuum sealed bag with desiccant. Once opened, the filament should be stored properly to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air. The best way to store filaments in a tightly sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum sealed container or in an intelligent filament container. During printing, the filament can be placed in a filament drying device. If the PLA Wood filament absorbs humidity, it should be dried before printing at 50 ºC for 4 hours or longer.
The manufacturer recommends printing the PLA Wood filament at 210-230 ºC on a bed heated to 60-70 ºC. It is recommended although not necessary to use a printer with a heated chamber (PLA Wood needs 20 ºC). It is, however, cruicial to use a nozzle diameter of minimum 0.5 mm.
It is highly recommended to wear standard safety equipment during the printing and post-processing of parts 3D printed with the Nanovia PLA Wood filament - safety goggles, gloves, breathing equipment and protective garments, according to needs.
