As the 3D printing market keeps evolving, so does the range of applications 3D printing can be used for. 3D printing of complex geometries and structures is no longer a challenge. To 3D print complex shapes with FDM, it is necessary, however, to use supports with overhangs greater than 45 º or a bridge longer than 10 mm. Supports must be removed after the printing process is complete but it must be done very carefully not to damage the surface of the printed piece. The solution to that risk are soluble filaments.

For advanced filaments with exigent use conditions, such as high extrusion and chamber temperatures, conventional support materials are not suitable. Oftentimes, conventional solvent substances are expensive, require ventilation or breathing equipment (D-Limonene), or are difficult to dispose of due to their toxicity. This is why the prolific filament manufacturer Kai Parthy has developed Chamberlay 100, a high temperature water-soluble support filament based on the High-T-Lay formula but with improvements, designed to substitute High-T-Lay. The old High-T-Lay filament had already been designed to replace Lay-PVA; Therefore, we are facing the third generation of evolution of this soluble filament.

Chamberlay 100 is an excellent support material for high temperature plastics, such as ABS, PC, HIPS, PET, PU and PLA, since it can be 3D printed with chamber temperatures up to 100 ºC and extrusion temperatures of 230 - 280 ºC.

Chamberlay 100 soluble filament

Chamberlay 100 dissolves quickly in water, just as its predecessor High-T-Lay. It also maintains good rigidity before 3D printing with high thermal resistance. The advantage of using the water-soluble Chamberlay 100 instead of conventional support materials such as HiPS or PVA is that the process of dissolving the support printed with it is more convenient and less time-consuming, since no ventilation or breathing equipment is required.

The Chamberlay 100 support filament is perfect for users who do not have a professional work area and want to make complex parts that require support, quickly and easily. Any leftover support can be removed easily with a brush after soaking.

Chamberlay 100 dissolves quickly in water. Should there be any residue left on the surface of the printed piece after the dissolving process, the excess flaky support filament can be removed with a wet brush.

ChamberLay absorbs humidity from the ambient air moderately quickly. If during printing crackling noises or bubbling/sizzling occur at the nozzle exit, and the filament feels too soft, it is a clear indication that the filament contains excess moisture. To solve this problem it is recommended to store the filament in a vacuum sealed bag or a filament drying case, such as the Fiber Three F3 Safe Light or the F3 Safe Long Run. To achieve even better results, the Slice Engineering filament drying capsule should be used. If moist, the filament should be dried at 80°C for 3 hours.

Masterspool format

The 250 g format of the Chamberlay 100 filament can sometimes cause problems during the printing process because it does not include a spool to help the correct supply of material by the 3D printer.

To avoid this type of problem when printing this and other filaments that are sold in masterspool format, you can use a variable spool holder by Filament2Print. This device helps avoid all kinds of tangles and overlaps caused by the absence of a spool.
