PA (Nylon) is a silk-like synthetic polymer composed of polyamides, popular in the plastic industry for its high thermal stability, strength, chemical resistance and toughness. Those properties make nylon an especially popular material in engineering. The Ultrafuse PA filament is part of the BASF portfolio of engineering plastics, and it was developed especially for FFF 3D printing based on the BASF Ultramid portfolio.

The Ultramid materials are various grades of polyamides supplied by BASF for injection molding and extrusion. Materials from the Ultramid portfolio are characterized by an altered chemical structure which gives them high mechanical strength, improved stiffness and thermal stability. The Ultrafuse PA filament inherits those features, which allows it to work within a larger temperature range than standard PA filament, and maintain its toughness even at low temperatures. Additionally, the Ultrafuse PA filament exhibits good fatigue and wear resistance, and it has a low melting point, which makes it printable on many FDM 3D printers.

Compared to other materials from the Ultramid portfolio, the Ultrafuse PA filament can be 3D printed at lower temperatures than PA6 and PA66 thanks to its lower melting temperature. Moreover, the impact strength of the Ultrafuse PA is better than that of PA6 and PA66, which makes it suitable for environments where the 3D printed part would have to tolerate impacts. In addition, even though Ultrafuse PA is extremely stiff when 3D printed thick, it is possible to print semi-flexible thin parts, which makes Ultrafuse PA a versatile material for numerous conditions and applications.

The Ultrafuse PA is so much more than any standard PA filament. Its customized composition and features make it an advanced engineering material adapted to the needs of 3D printing. The Ultrafuse PA filament has endless potential applications, for example in automotive construction, electrical engineering and electronics, household technology, industrial connection, photovoltaics, construction and installation, furniture, the sanitary industry and in mechanical engineering.

The Ultrafuse PA filament should be stored in its original package (with a filament drying capsule for a better effect), in a vacuum sealed bag or an intelligent filament container before and after printing to be protected from moisture and preserve its properties. During printing, the spool can be placed in a drying case or an inline filament dryer. If the Ultrafuse PP filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried in a hot air dryer for 4-16 hours at 70 ºC to ensure printability. For best mechanical properties, it is recommended to dry the filament at 80 ºC in a vacuum oven for at least 40 hours.

The Ultrafuse PA filament should be printed at 220-250 ºC at a speed of 30-60 mm/s. In order to avoid deformation and warping, and ensure proper adhesion, the bed should be heated to a temperature of 90-120 ºC and adhesion products should be used. The best combination for the Ultrafuse PA filament is a glass printing bed with a small amount of PVA glue, adhesive spray or Kapton Tape.

The Ultrafues PA filament is compatible with both breakaway support materials as well as with the Ultrafuse BVOH water soluble support filament.
