Solay is a filament developed under the Lay Filaments brand by the prestigious engineer Kai-Parthy. Thanks to its experience in polymers and specific materials for different applications, Lay Filaments offers innovative and unique materials in the market for FDM 3D printers.

The filaments developed by Kay Parthy are characterised by unusual properties not found in other FDM 3D printing filaments on the market. These include Lay-FommMold-Lay or the flexible wood filament Lay-Wood-Flex.

Solay is a flexible and elastic filament with properties reminiscent of rubber and, to some extent, of leather. The hardness of this material is Shore 90°, similar to that of filaments such as Flexfill TPE 90A.

Solay is a filament that has been developed with the textile sector in mind, although it has various applications in different sectors.

Solay is an easy to print filament in almost any FDM 3D printer, being easier to print if the 3D printer has a direct extruder (recommended for 3D printing of flexible filaments).

Once printed, the material is similar to rubber. The finish of the parts is notable for its rough surfaces that perfectly conceal the lines of the coating.

This filament is cream coloured, but one of its particularities is that both the filament and the 3D printed pieces can be dyed with alcohol based inks. There are several ways to do this:

  • Dye the desired areas with a permanent alcohol-based marker.
  • Immerse the piece in a container with alcohol-based ink.
  • Use a brush soaked in alcohol-based ink to dye the desired areas.

Due to the texture of the material, the finish once dyed has a very striking "worn" effect

Both the texture and the option of dyeing the pieces printed in 3D with this material, make it a very interesting option with diverse applications in different sectors.

One of the most used applications is 3D printing of soles for footwear manufacturing or prototyping. It is also possible to use this material for the manufacture of accessories such as belts or bracelets.

The filaments developed under the Lay Filaments brand offer very interesting options for experimental applications thanks to their unusual properties.

To print the Solay filament it is not necessary to have a warm bed in the 3D printer, although if you do have one, it is recommended that you use it at 50 / 60 ºC. The recommended printing temperature ranges from 175ºC to 190ºC. Depending on the printing temperature, the colour of the material varies; at a higher temperature a toasted tone is obtained, while at a lower temperature a cream tone is achieved.

This filament can be printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle without fear of jams.

Its adhesion to the printing base is good, although Kapton TapeBlue Tape or 3DLac can be used for optimum adhesion.

Once the printing with this filament is finished, the filament should be removed and the cleaning filament should be loaded to avoid jams in future prints.

Masterspool format

The 250 g. format of the Solay filament can sometimes cause problems during the printing process because it does not include a spool that helps the correct supply of material from the 3D printer.

To avoid this type of problem when printing this and other filaments that are sold in masterspool format you can use a variable spool holder. Thanks to the use of this device, all kinds of tangles and overlaps derived from the absence of a spool are largely avoided.
