Mass Portal MP20 / MP20DN - FDM 3D printer

MP20-3D-PRINTER-1

Even though Delta 3D printers also use the Cartesian coordinates in their functioning, they are unique mechanically and structurally, and designed for high accuracy 3D printing at fast speeds. An excellent example of a Delta 3D printer is the MP20/MP20DN desktop FFF/FDM 3D printers by Mass Portal, a Latvian designer and manufacturer of high quality 3D printers and peripherals.

The MP20 3D printer comes in two types - the MP20 and the MP20DN printer. Both printers stand out thanks to their high precision and some interesting features such as automatic calibration to compensate for nozzle height variations, a touch screen interface, overheating protection, and an all metal hotend and feeder with a Bowden extrusion system. What differs them is that the MP20DN 3D printer has a Dual Nozzle hotend, which allows for 3D printing with two materials at once and creating complex parts with the help of support filaments. Both printers come with 0.4 mm nozzles included. The printheads on both MP20 and MP20DN printers are capable of traveling at 250 mm/s on precision linear guideways.

Printheads MP20

What’s more, the MP20 and MP20DN printers both have a cylindric build volume of Ø 200 mm x 200 mm and an enclosed illuminated printing chamber. The chamber is equipped with multiple fans for better cooling, as well as air and active carbon filters responsible for limiting the fumes and microparticles from escaping the chamber.

The MP20/MP20DN hotends are capable of processing 1.75 mm filaments at temperatures of up to 300 ºC, which means that a wide variety of materials can be 3D printed with the Mass Portal MP20/MP20DN 3D printers, for example PLA, ABS, ASA, PET(g), Nylon, PC, PP or TPU/TPE. The round printing bed of the MP20/MP20DN 3D printers is made of glass, compatible with various bed adhesion options, depending on the user’s needs and the extruded material. The printing bed can be heated up to a temperature of up to 120 ºC in 5 minutes.

User interface

As all Mass Portal 3D printers and peripherals, the MP20/MP20DN 3D printers are integrated with the FabControl AM Platform that allows the user to control, configure and monitor the 3D printing process as well as the filament drying process if the Mass Portal filament dryers FD1 or FD5 are used. This is also facilitated by status notifications that the user receives from the FabControl platform during the 3D printing process. The same actions can be performed on the user interface integrated into the printer structure. The connectivity options are USB 2.0 and Ethernet jacks, as well as Wi-Fi that allows the user to access the FabControl platform.

The MP20 and MP20DN 3D printers are compact options for professionals as well as beginners to create a smooth and efficient 3D printing workflow. The straightforward user interface, diverse connectivity options and safety features make the MP20 and MP20DN 3D printers safe and convenient to use even in a domestic setting. The high extrusion and bed temperatures allow for using a wide range of polymers as well as support filaments thanks to the dual nozzle system of the MP20DN printer. The Mass Portal printers can be used together with the FD1 and FD5 filament dryers in order to ensure filament quality before the 3D printing process begins.

In order to improve adhesion of the 3D printed part to the glass printing surface of the MP20 3D printer, it is recommended to use adhesives in accordance with the polymer extruded. There are many adhesive products available for glass surfaces, for example the DimaFix or 3DLac adhesive sprays or the liquid adhesives with applicators - Magigoo3DLac Stick or the Smart Stick adhesives. Adhesive sticks with applicators are safer for air transport.

The glass printing bed of the MP20 3D printer should be regularly cleaned of any glue or filament residue with a scraper by applying firm and even pressure. The glass surface should be wiped before each printing session and cleaned thoroughly approximately once a month or according to needs. For that a cloth soaked with a small amount of IPA alcohol or acetone can be used. Protective gloves should always be used when handling IPA alcohol or acetone to protect the user’s skin as well as avoid leaving greasy fingerprints on the glass build surface. Glass printing surfaces can also be cleaned with warm soapy water but only if they can be removed from the 3D printer.
