The PI Z2 filament is printable polyimide created by 3D4Makers in collaboration with Zymergen. The PI Z2 filament demonstrates significant advantages for printing parts that require high tensile strength, higher yield, and high mechanical strength (including Z strength) for performance in every direction.

Polyimide is a very high-strength polymer from the group of high-performance plastics, and it is frequently used in very demanding applications, characterized by inherent flame retardance, excellent insulating properties and excellent thermal stability.

As a matter of fact, the PI Z2 filament meets the requirements of the EN 45545 regulation for fire behaviour of materials in trains. Within that norm, the PI Z2 filament complies with the most exigent risk level HL3, requisites R22 and R23. This compliance makes the PI Z2 filament suitable for railway vehicles applications.

The PI Z2 filament is also reliable and easy to print with on many FDM 3D printers, with low warpage and good bed adhesion. This feature means that higher outputs can be achieved with very few reject parts. Furthermore, parts 3D printed with PI Z2 do not need to be annealed after printing to perform well, which significantly shortens processing time and agilizes the workflow with this material.

Once opened, the PI Z2 filament should be stored properly to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air. The best way to store filaments in a tightly sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum sealed container or in an intelligent filament container. It is recommended to dry the filament at 120°C for 4 hours if it abords too much humidity.

The manufacturer recommends printing PI Z2 filament at 390-410 ºC on a bed heated to 120-160 ºC at a speed of 15-150 mm/s. PI Z2 filament requires a heated chamber (80-160°C) and is best used with a glass/carbon plate and a ruby nozzle or a hardened nozzle of 0.4 mm (or larger).  In case of adhesion problems, the manufacturer recommends applying a layer of high temperature adhesives such as Magigoo HT or Nano Polymer Adhesive.

It is highly recommended to wear standard safety equipment during the printing and post-processing of parts 3D printed with the PI Z2 filament - safety goggles, gloves, breathing equipment and protective garments, according to needs.
