Formlabs' BioMed Resins were developed for customers seeking medical-grade biocompatible materials for a wide range of applications, from prototypes to end-use devices. Customers can use these materials with confidence for applications that require contact of the patient's skin and mucous membrane. In addition to meeting the requirements of the ISO standard for biocompatibility, BioMed resins also comply with ISO 13485.

Both BioMed Clear resin and BioMed Amber resin produce strong, functional parts that are biocompatible and compatible with most common sterilization techniques. BioMed Clear Resin is USP Class VI certified and is suitable for the manufacture of durable parts and parts requiring low water absorption. BioMed Amber Resin is suitable for the manufacture of rigid parts that may require higher definition.

The following table shows the comparison between these two resins:

Material Biomed Clear Biomed Amber
Tensile strength 52.9 ± 1.3 MPa 73 MPa
Tensile modulus 2.08 ± 0.13 GPa 2.9 GPa
Elongation 12.2 % ± 4.2 % 12.3 %
Bending strength 84.4 ± 1.0 MPa 103 MPa
Bending modulus 2.29 ± 0.02 GPa 2.50 GPa
Shore D hardness 67 D

BioMed Clear is a hard and durable material designed for use in biocompatible applications that require continuous contact with the skin or mucous membranes. This Class VI material is suitable for applications requiring wear resistance and low water absorption over time. Parts printed with BioMed Clear Resin are compatible with common disinfection and sterilization methods.

BioMed Clear Resin is ISO 13485 certified and is included in an American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Device Master File.

BioMed Clear is the improved version of the Dental LT Clear. Compared to the Dental LT Clear resin, it has the following advantages:

  1. 0.3 mm bracket contact points on Form 3B, reducing post-processing of parts.
  2. Faster impressions
  3. Improved resistance to yellowing: 60% less yellow
  4. Color and clarity similar to PMMA
  5. Impact resistance 50% higher.

Due to its characteristics, this resin has different applications, both in the dental sector and in other areas:

Dental applications:

  • Occlusal splints
  • Occlusal protectors
  • Wear prevention

Medical and other applications:

  • Medical device manufacturing
  • Templates and accessories
  • Surgical planning tools and implant sizing.
  • Bioprocessing equipment
  • Research & Development
  • Consumer goods, arts and entertainment

Thus, BioMed Clear resin is a medical grade biocompatible material designed for use in a wide variety of applications in the healthcare industry.

To ensure the biocompatibility of BioMed Clear resin, the use of dedicated tanks, construction platform and finishing kits are required and should only be used with this and other biocompatible Formlabs resins.

Here below, a series of usage tips that must be taken into account at all times with the use of FormLabs resins are cited:

Change cartridge

Changing the resin cartridge of the FormLabs printers is very simple, just close the top cap of the ventilation duct (vent) and remove the cartridge by holding it by the handle it has. Then the other is inserted and the vent plug is opened in case an impression is to be started. To avoid drips through the 3D printer, this process must always be carried out with the resin tank mounted.

After finishing each print, the top cap must be closed so that the resin maintains its properties. In addition, if the printer is not used for some time, the cartridge should be stored in its original box to keep the properties of the resin intact.

Resin tank

Each type of resin should have its own resin tank, which should be changed after using 2L of resin. The Biomed Clear resin is compatible with the LT resin tank and the Form 3 resin tank.

To protect and store the excess resin in the tank after each printing, FormLabs supplies a lid that ensures a perfect closure. Once the tank is closed, it is recommended to store it (with resin and lid) in the original box so that the resin doesn't lose its properties when exposed to UV rays for a long time. Another point to keep in mind is that the tanks can't be cleaned with any cleaning product or similar (for example, isopopyl alcohol), since they lose certain qualities that can cause continuous failed impressions.

Failed printing

When an error occurs in printing may be because solid parts of a previous printing have fallen to the resin tank. In this case, a spatula at 45° must be passed through the printing tank, gathering all the solid parts in a corner and removing them. To ensure that the tank resin doesn't contain any solid parts, the resin should be cast with a 190 μm paper filter. Once cast, it is put back into the tank and it is ready to be used again.

Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol is the key to the washing and post-processing of parts and you should know when it is time to change it. In the Finish Kit the moment to change it's when the IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) is so saturated with resin particles, that after washing the pieces are still sticky. At that point you must remove all the liquid, clean the container well and throw new IPA, but never fill in on the previous one.

In the Form Wash, the wash center itself indicates through its screen when it is time to change the isopropyl alcohol.
