The KeyCast dental resin is manufactured by KeyStone Industries as part of their KeyPrint line of precision 3D printing resins for the dental industry. The KeyCast resin was designed to produce residue-free and precise dental castings via investment molding. The low shrinkage formula used in the KeyCast resin controls thermal expansion to yield porous-free and accurate castings.

Removable partial denture frames, crowns, bridges and copings can be made with the KeyCast resin in a clean ash-free burnout process with both rapid and gradual temperature ramping. The KeyCast resin is compatible with a variety of investment casting materials (chrome, cobalt, gold, and silver).

The casting materials recommended for the KeyCast resin are the KeyVest universal dental investment material, the Satin Cast 20 by Kerr or Ultra-Vest by Ransom & Randolph. Using these materials will prevent adverse reactions between the casted part and investment material during the burnout process.

For best results, flasks should be centrifuged to remove any air bubbles, and bench cured for 2 hours prior to burnout. A space of 4 mm or more should be left between part edges and the outside edge of the flask to ensure proper absorption of expansion during burnout. The temperature ramp should be held at 260°C (500°F) for at least one hour to ensure proper part dimensional stability.

The KeyPrint KeyCast resin should be stored in a cool, dry place and away from light. Precautions should be taken at all times to ensure user safety. It is recommended to use protective gloves and garments, and a face screen to prevent burns caused by hot resin. The KeyCast resin is intended for professional bench/lab work only and it is not suitable for intra-oral use.

There are certain steps that need to be taken before use. The resin should be tempered to ambient temperature (20-25°C) prior to printing. The bottle should be shaken 1 hour prior to use in order to achieve consistency of the resin and to prevent bubbles. If bubbles are still present, they should be removed with a clean spatula. The KeyPrint resin should only be used in accordance with the product-specific predetermined settings for the user’s DLP 3D printer with a 385nm - 405 nm UV light source. Any other equipment requires validation by the manufacturer.

Within 8 hours from the completion of the print, the part should be cleaned with IPA alcohol (at least 97%) in a preliminary bath (no longer than 5 minutes) and then transferred to fresh IPA for the second bath, just like shown in video 1. Compressed air can be used to dry the part, looking for residual liquid resin, which will be visible as it remains glossy. Residual resin should be removed by repeating the washing and drying as needed.

Lastly, the part should be placed in a curing machine (flat to prevent warping). The validated cure box settings can be consulted on the manufacturer’s website.
