Treed Filaments, an Italian 3D printing materials manufacturer that stands out for its wide catalogue of filaments developed for various applications and sectors, such as the medical sector, the architecture and art sector or high-performance technical filaments for industry. Among these materials is the HIRMA PMMA filament.
PMMA, or polymethyl methacrylate, is a widely used thermoplastic in FDM 3D printing. Also known as acrylic or acrylic glass, PMMA offers exceptional optical clarity, high strength, and UV radiation resistance. Its compatibility with FDM makes it suitable for creating transparent impact-resistant components, making it a preferred choice for various applications in the 3D printing industry.
The PMMA HIRMA filament, modified version of PMMA (PolyMethylMetaAcrylate), is an advanced 3D printing filament and its commercial name "HIRMA" is an acronym for "high impact resistance modified acrylic". The HIRMA PMMA filament boasts several desirable properties such as very high resistance to shocks and scratches, UV resistance, as well as ease of printing (easier than PC), which makes it ideal for 3D printing applications such as modeling, prototyping and end-use parts, including parts for outdoor use. Another noteworthy feature of this filament is that parts 3D printed with it can be made fully transparent via polishing/acetone smoothing.
The recommended printing parameters for using the HIRMA PMMA filament as well as storage tips can be found in the material's technical datasheet in the Downloads section and in the Usage Tips section. It's highly recommended to dry the filament before printing by heating it to 70°C for at least 3 hours in a filament dryer for optimal results.

The PMMA Hirma filament should be extruded at 220-230 ºC onto a bed heated to 90-110 ºC. The recommended layer fan speed is 20%, the optimal printing speed is 30-50 mm/s, and the minimum recommended nozzle diameter is 0.3 mm.
To ensure the longevity of PMMA Hirma and the good quality of 3D prints, proper storage conditions must be maintained. The filament should be protected from moisture by storing it in a vacuum-sealed bag with a desiccant such as the Slice Engineering desiccant capsule, in an intelligent filament container, or in the Fiber Three drying case. It is highly recommended to dry the filament before printing at 70 ºC for at least 3 hours in a filament dryer to ensure optimal results.
To obtain a completely transparent piece, it is recommended to post-process the 3D printed part by means of polishing. For this process, we can use the Proto-Pasta Polish Kit.
