One of the reasons why Polypropylene (PP) has not been very successful in 3D printing so far has been due to the difficulty of printing it, due to the high warping effect that had the common polypropylene filaments. Due to this problem the Spanish company "Smart Materials 3D" has been developing the new filament of Polypropylene PP Smartfil (1.75mm or 2.85mm) which is a PP filament especially additive in order to improve its adherence to the printing surface and thus reduce the warping effect.

Until now, the only way to get the polypropylene impressions to the base was to use polypropylene packaging tape on the base of the 3D printer (due to the affinity between the same material). But after months of research, Smart Materials has managed to develop an adhesive liquid called Smart Stick that makes it possible to print polypropylene filament without having to apply PP packing tape on the base, which is more complicated to apply and there are usually bubbles in the base that leave marked the impression.

Smart Stick is a adhesive liquid used to improve the adhesion of the parts manufactured by FDM with the manufacturing surface. With this liquid a strong contact adhesion is obtained eliminating the warping produced by the contraction of the material during the printing due to the thermal difference produced.

Smart Stick is especially indicated for use with Smartfil PP (Polypropylene). Because of the chemical nature of polypropylene, its use for 3D printing is really complicated, due to the incompatibility of this material with most existing adhesive materials, causing the piece not to adhere to the surface. For this, Smart Stick acts as an interface between the material and the base, achieving great adhesion.

Although it has been developed to facilitate the printing of the Polypropylene filament, Smart Stick is also a valid fixer for the majority of market filaments such as ABS,HiPS,PLA,PETG,Nylonstrong, etc.

The Smart Stick comes with a handy silicone spatula to aid application

In addition, due to its packaging, it is very easy to use, unlike polypropylene tape, which is more complex to apply due to the need to use a spatula to apply it without leaving air bubbles that would leave the final piece marked. The Smart Stick adhesive comes in liquid format and is accompanied by a silicone spatula to aid spreading the adhesive evenly on the printing surface. In the usage tips tab it is described how to use and apply the Smart Stick adhesive.

Apply Smart Stick, the adhesive liquid very simple. The main steps to take into account are the following:

  1. REMOVE THE CONTAINER SEAL: The first time it's used it's necessary to eliminate the internal seal that is under the lid to avoid that the content can be spilled before being used. Therefore, the applicator cap must be unscrewed and the internal seal removed.
  2. APPLY THE PRODUCT: It should be applied to the printing base in a homogeneous way. This will create a thin adhesive film that will provide adhesion. The included silicone spatula will help spread the adhesive properly. Once the product has been applied, it's recommended to close the bottle again to prevent the internal liquid from drying out, causing the nozzle to clog.
  3. DURING THE PRINTING OF THE PIECE: Smart Stick is a product that works both in 3D printers with hot bed and without it. In the case of printers with a hot bed, the ideal operating temperature is 70-90ºC. In impressions where a great adhesion is required it's recommended to increase the base temperature between 90-100ºC for the first layer in order to achieve a great adherence between the material and the adhesive and later reduce it again to 70ºC in order to increase The structural capacity of the adhesive.
  4. EXTRACTION OF THE PIECE: Once the piece is made, the union between materials is very strong so it's recommended to introduce the tray in water so that this union is weakened and can be removed later by using a spatula. Another "homemade" trick is to introduce the glass tray with the piece attached to a refrigerator or freezer to accelerate cooling.
  5. CLEANING THE PLATFORM: In many cases, the layer created once the adherent is applied can be reused with the same results. Once the layer has defects and it has to be replaced, it's necessary to apply hot water to the printing tray so that the adhesive is weakened and then removed with a spatula. The PrintaClean can also be used to clean the platform.  It's recommended to use the product on a glass base or a removable base so that it can be easily cleaned later.
