The BASF portfolio of support filaments includes the Ultrafuse BVOH support filament soluble in waterSupport structures allow for the 3D printing of complex geometries and structures with features that are otherwise difficult to achieve with the FFF technology. Soluble support materials make the task of support removal even easier than breakaway supports, and water soluble support filaments have the added advantage of being faster, more affordable, and more sustainable to use since there are no chemical solvents involved in the process of support removal.

The Ultrafuse BVOH support filament is a butanediol vinyl alcohol polymer, biodegradable, non-toxic and emitting no odor while 3D printed. It is characterized by a slightly better adhesion than PVA, another water soluble support material, as well as increased solubility with high water temperatures. The Ultrafuse BVOH support filament is compatible with a wide range of 3D printing materials by BASF, such as PLA, PLA PRO1, ABS, ABS Fusion+, PA and PAHT CF15.

All BASF filaments are manufactured on state-of-the-art computer controlled machinery and subjected to strict quality control, which guarantees consistent filament diameter, color and mechanical properties. The Ultrafuse BVOH support filament is an excellent choice for engineering projects where structurally complex parts are involved, and the manual removal of breakaway supports would be impossible or could compromise part’s appearance or functionality.

BVOH is an extremely hygroscopic material, which is why it should be stored in dry conditions at all times - before, during and after printing. The correct way to store Ultrafuse BVOH is in its original packaging, with a filament drying capsule, or in a vacuum sealed bag. An intelligent filament container can also be used to protect the filament from humidity. During printing, the spool can be placed in the Fiber Three filament drying case or a filament dryer. If the BVOH support filament absorbs excess moisture (which manifests in, among others, oozing, bubbles, sizzling and surface imperfections on the part), it should be dried at 60 °C in a hot air dryer or vacuum oven for 4 to 16 hours.

3D printing with a support material requires the use of a 3D printer with at least 2 extruders. The Ultrafuse BVOH filament should be printed at 190-210 ºC, on a glass bed heated to 60-100 ºC. The recommended printing speed is 30-60 mm/s.
