As any technology, FDM 3D printing is not free of limitations and one of them is the manufacturing of complex structures. The solution to that problem is support materials, breakaway or soluble in water. The US manufacturer of advanced filaments and support Infinite Material Solutions materials has added a new material to their portfolio, the general purpose Aquasys GP.

AquaSys GP is soluble in tap water at room temperature (25 ºC) so there is no need for tedious manual removal of supports at the risk of destroying the surface finish of the printed part. Another benefit of the water solubility of Aquasys GP is that there are no chemicals involved in the dissolution process. Aquasys GP is derived from a naturally-occurring element that mineralizes in the environment after disposal. This makes Aquasys GP the ideal support material for environmentally conscious 3D printer users in the manufacturing sector, educational uses and also at home use. Aquasys GP dissolves 20 % faster than PVA, which makes an interesting alternative to that support material.

This material is perfect for everyday 3D printing projects since it is compatible with a wide range of common 3D printing materials such as PLA, PET, PETg and more. It prints well at a chamber temperature of up to 30 ºC or even at room temperature

The advantages of Aquasys GP don’t end there as it yields excellent print fidelity, exhibits low shrinkage and adheres very well to a variety of build materials and build plates including glass, PC-ABS and PEI. Good bed adhesion is crucial to obtaining uniform parts with fewer defects.

All these qualities make the Aquasys GP apt for the manufacturing of jigs and fixtures and for rapid prototyping, as well as the production of end use parts with touch and durable main materials and a convenient support material than can be removed in a matter of minutes without the risk of damaging the final piece, which tends to be the case with breakaway supports.

AquaSys GP is a solution ideal for both professional and entry-level users because of its fast dissolution, easy removal, and material compatibility.

In order to prevent humidity from affecting the condition of Aquasys GP and the quality of the prints, it is recommended to store AquaSys GP in vacuum sealed packaging with some kind of desiccant, like the Slice Engineering filament drying capsule. If the material accumulates moisture, it should be dried at 40-50 °C. Humidity levels can be controlled with the help of monitors such as the PrintDry digital humidity and temperature monitor.

Other drying solutions can also be used, such as the Fiber Three filament drying case available in two sizes - Fiber Three Safe Light and Long Run.

As far as the printing parameters, the manufacturer recommends extruding Aquasys GP at 225-255 °C, on a heated build plate (40-60 °C) and in a heated chamber (up to 30 °C).

More detailed information about the material and the printing settings can be found in the Downloads section in the technical and security datasheets.
