Smartfil Glace is a filament that offers what many users of a 3D FDM printer look for, almost 100% translucent pieces.

This thermoplastic polymer shows impact resistance, high flexibility and other mechanical properties superior to ABS and PLA. Smartfil Glace does not present the problematic warping effect, giving the possibility of making really large pieces without errors and with an excellent finish.

Smartfil Glace is a filament that can be post-processed with alcohol, such as PolySmooth, to achieve different finishes. Within these finishes, the possibility of achieving a very high translucency, close to 100 %, or polishing the surface to eliminate roughness, obtaining a pearly finish. In addition, this polishing with alcohol increases the structural strength by strengthening the bond between layers and ensures the tightness of the piece.

The union of all the aforementioned properties, affirm that Smartfil Glace is an ideal filament to make resistant and translucent pieces, recommended to print containers and housings for industrial applications, where it is necessary to check the correct functioning of the system that is inside.

All users who want the (almost) transparent finish can visit the "Tips for Use" section to know how to perform post-processing.

To achieve pieces close to 100% translucency, it is recommended to print models with a single layer of thickness so that the alcohol penetrates homogeneously on the material. Another important aspect is to use nozzle with large outlet diameter, 0.8 mm or more, to obtain pieces with sufficient wall thickness to maintain the necessary mechanical strength. If the user wishes to achieve the closest to transparency finish, it is recommended to use the "Spiral Vase" printing mode, with which the part is manufactured in a continuous layer.

How to get transparent parts

To achieve this finish, the user must use alcohol (ethyl or isopropyl) with a concentration higher than 70º, taking into account that the higher the graduation, the faster it will be in post-processing, but the more complex it will be to control it. The methods of application of alcohol are:

Direct application by immersion: You must completely submerge the piece in a container with alcohol for a few seconds, taking into account that this process is very aggressive, causing deformations if the time is excessive. The piece is then removed and allowed to drain until the alcohol evaporates completely.

Direct application in piece: The user must spray the surfaces of the piece directly with alcohol and then let the alcohol evaporate naturally. This method causes the piece to soften a little due to the absorption of alcohol, but this is eliminated once all the alcohol has evaporated.

Application by evaporation: In a completely closed container the piece to be post-processed and a paper impregnated with alcohol are introduced, so that it surrounds the piece. The user must ensure that the paper is not in contact with the piece, as that will deform it. If, after evaporating all the alcohol from the paper, the finish is not desired, the process can be repeated.

These processes, in addition to increasing translucency, improve the appearance of the piece by smoothing the surface, regardless of geometry.
