The Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament is a fiber reinforced material from the BASF family of reinforced filaments. It contains 15 % of carbon fibers which, combined with the properties of PET, gives a filament with a wide range of technical applications thanks to its strength, stiffness, thermal resistance (up to 74 ºC), dimensional stability, low moisture absorption and low abrasiveness. This combination of properties makes the Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament a resilient and versatile, as well as an easily printable material.

Carbon fibers are frequently used in additive manufacturing as a way of creating filaments that yield more rigid parts with lower weight, increased chemical resistance, great dimensional stability and improved thermal properties. Another benefit that carbon fibers offer is better printability, as carbon fiber reinforced filaments tend to adhere better to the printing base and warp less. The Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament can be extruded directly onto a glass printing surface or a PEI sheet, and combined with HIPS for breakaway support or water soluble support to create geometrically or structurally complex parts. This allows for the 3D printing of not only accurate prototypes but also precise tools and end use parts with an excellent surface finish.

The outstanding thermal, chemical and mechanical properties of PET combined with the benefits offered by carbon fiber create a filament ideal for industrial applications. With the Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament it is possible to manufacture light weight (even light-duty aluminum substitutes) parts that will be used in humid and chemically hostile environments, while preserving dimensional stability and stiffness. The easy processability, affordability and excellent surface finish are additional advantages.

High speed printing

Furthermore, the PET CF15 Ultrafuse filament is compatible with high printing speeds. In order to create complex structures with this material and a support material, the Xioneer VXL 90 soluble support material is recommended by the manufacturer. This support material can be extruded at high speeds as well, which means a smooth and efficient 3D printing. The water solubility of VXL 90 makes the post-processing more precise and fast. The Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament should be stored at 15-25°C in a clean and dry environment in order to protect the material from humidity, and ensure its longevity and successful prints. Ideally, it should be stored in its originally sealed package or a vacuum sealed bag with a filament drying capsule inside the spool for even better results. The Ultrafuse PET CF15 can also be stored in an intelligent filament container before and after printing, and in a filament drying device during printing. Should the filament absorb moisture, it should be dried in a hot air dryer or vacuum oven for 4-16 hours at 65 ºC.

The best printing surface for the Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament is a glass build surface or a PEI sheet. The bed should be heated to 65-85 ºC, and the filament should be extruded at 250-270 ºC at a speed of 30-80 mm/s. No heated chamber is required with the Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament.

Even though the Ultrafuse PET CF15 filament is characterized by low abrasiveness, it is still highly recommended to use an abrasion resistant hardened steel or ruby tip nozzle with a diameter of at least 0.6 mm.
