Filaflex Conductive is one of the filaments developed by the Spanish manufacturer Recreus, known for the production of Filaflex 82A, Filaflex 70A or Filaflex 60A Pro filaments, the most flexible and elastic FDM 3D printing materials on the market.

Filaflex Conductive is a flexible TPU elastic filament. With a hardness of 92A, it achieves 100% elongation at break. After stretching it returns to its original shape, without deforming or breaking, presenting excellent mechanical properties.

It is also a very easy-to-print material, compatible with almost any FDM 3D printer on the market, even those with a Bowden-type extruder.

However, its most outstanding characteristic is its electrical conductivity.

Electrical conductivity

Filaflex Conductive filament offers a volumetric resistivity of approximately 3.9 Ω-cm, much higher than other conductive filaments. Volumetric resistivity is the measure of a material's resistance to electricity within one cubic centimetre of material. In order to determine whether the material will perform the functions in your project, you will need to take into account that the resistance will change depending on your print.

Flexible Conductive Tracings and Electrodes

The main applications of Filaflex Conductive filament are in the creation of electrically conductive circuits used for flexible electronics. Some examples of projects are:

Note: In order to successfully use the Filaflex Conductive Filament in electronic applications, the electrical resistance of the circuit must be considered. It should be noted that this filament is designed for low current applications.

EMI/RF shielding achieves this by blocking AM, FM, TV, emergency services, and cellular signals. Filaflex Conductive Filament is ideal for the design of RF/EMI shields used in highly customised items.

Thus, Filaflex Conductive filament is a material specifically designed to enable 3D printing of electronically conductive components using almost any commercially available FDM/FFF 3D printer, extending the capabilities of additive manufacturing or 3D printing and shortening the path from development to commercial application.

Although specific resistivity values may be provided, the following characteristics must be considered when working with Filaflex Conductive filament:

Non-linear conductivity: As a polymeric material with conductive fillers, its electrical behavior is non-linear. Resistance may vary depending on the applied electric field, mechanical deformation (stretching), and printing parameters.

Influence of 3D printing conditions: Factors such as nozzle temperature, infill, layer height, and the extrusion multiplier can affect the conductivity of the final printed part.

Therefore, for research purposes or specific applications, it is strongly recommended to measure resistivity on a printed geometry that replicates the final part, rather than relying solely on the raw filament values.

The filaments of the Filaflex range are characterised by their great adherence to the printing base, so they do not require a hot bed, although, if available, it is advisable to use it at a temperature of between 50 and 60 ºC. Printing with this filament requires different guidelines to rigid filaments. To do so, the 3D printer must be configured appropriately.

This filament is designed for use with prints intended for room temperature operation and for use in low voltage and low current projects only. It may not exceed 12 volts and use of the filament for power supply exceeding 100 mA should be avoided. The value of a resistor is directly proportional to the length of the conductor and inversely proportional to the conductor cross-section.

Possible contamination of the Filaflex Conductive filament, such as dirt from hands or dust from the environment, should be avoided as much as possible. A nozzle for printing Conductive Filaflex filament of at least 0.4 mm is recommended.

Conductive Filaflex filament has a tendency to stick to brass nozzles, so plastic repellent paint can be used.

Filaflex Conductive filament should be stored in a dry place away from dust and other particles. The user should avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. The 3D printer nozzle should always be washed before and after using the filament to avoid printing complications. It is important to wash hands before and after using this filament to avoid contaminating the filament.

The intrinsic properties of Filaflex Conductive filament are such that it should not be left idle in the extruder of the 3D printer (while not printing) as it can expand and cause clogging of the nozzle (Clogging). Therefore, after printing, the filament should be removed as soon as possible from the extruder and cleaning filament should be used.

On the other hand it is also very important to have the base of the 3D printer perfectly level, otherwise a significant amount will accumulate on the outer surface of the nozzle, which will solidify and obstruct the flow of the melt.
