Medphen is a Spanish company that specializes in the research, development and manufacturing of FDM 3D printing materials for medical applications, such as antimicrobial materials, graphene based materials or fiber reinforced filaments.

One of the advanced materials from the Medphen portfolio is the PEEK Ketaspire for use in Class I Medical Devices (ISO 10993-1) and in devices with USP Class VI Biocompatibility.

The PEEK Ketaspire by Medphen contains 10% of carbon fibers in its composition in order to provide the material greater strength and the parts 3D printed with its greater dimensional stability and lightness. The addition of carbon fibers also contributes to the Peek Ketaspire being more resistant to chemicals, wear and abrasions, which together with its reduced weight makes it ideal for 3D printing parts that will be in constant use in harsh conditions, such as medical environments where it may be exposed to lipids, cleaning agents and disinfectants.

PEEK, the material this filament is made of, stands for polyether ether ketone and it is a colorless organic semi crystalline thermoplastic polymer from the PAEK group of plastics. Together with PEKK and PEI, it is located at the very top of the plastics pyramid, which makes it an advanced plastic, distinguished by its excellent mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance.

Apart from countless versatile applications in the automotive, aerospace, teletronic and chemical industries, PEEK is also used in the medical sector, for example in the manufacturing of medical implants, in neurosurgical applications and in certain applications in high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Since the Medphen PEEK Ketaspire is certified for use in Class I medical devices and devices with Class VI biocompatibility, it can be safely used to 3D print parts that will be used in these environments. However, it should be noted that each application should be tested separately to define the suitability of PEEK Ketaspire for that particular use.

The recommended processing temperature range for the Medphen PEEK Ketaspire is between 390 ºC and 420 ºC. The range is related to printing speed and the higher the processing speed used, the higher the temperature of the extrusion should be for optimal results.

The recommended bed temperature for this material is 120 °C. If problems with proper bed adhesion occur, the manufacturer recommends the use of adhesion products such as the Magigoo HT ideal for materials that use high extrusion temperatures.

Humidity is one of the biggest enemies of filament, leading to filament degradation and failed prints. This is why this PEEK Ketaspire filament should be stored in dry conditions before, during and after use, for example in a vacuum sealed bag with a drying capsule, in a vacuum container or a filament drying case by Fiber Three, available in size "Light" or "Long run". If the filament has absorbed too much humidity, it should be dried for at least 4 hours at 150 ºC.

In order to prevent breakage or deformations of the 3D printed pieces in the process of cooling, it is highly recommended to use a closed 3D printer and program a controlled cooling process, with a slow and gradual temperature decrease.

The manufacturer suggests annealing (post-crystallizing) parts 3D printed with the Medphen PEEK Ketaspire. The annealing process recommended by the manufacturer consists of 5 simple steps:

  1. Place the printed pieces in an oven at room temperature.
  2. Set the temperature at 120°C and let it stabilize for 1 hour.
  3. Increase the temperature to 150°C and let it stabilize for 1-3 hours (depending on the thickness of the 3D printed parts).
  4. Next, lower the temperature to 100°C and let it stabilize for 30 minutes.
  5. Then turn off the oven, allowing the pieces to cool down inside to room temperature.

Annealing will increase the crystallinity of the 3D printed parts and maximize their thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance.
