PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is, similarly to BVOH, a material very commonly used in 3D printing as a support material to make parts with complex geometries. The Xioneer PVA support filament is a water-soluble material compatible with PLA and PETG. One of the definite benefits over breakaway support filaments is that with Xioneer PVA the 3D printed part willl have an excellent surface finish once the support structures have been removed, thanks to PVA's solubility. This is crucial for parts that need not only to perform mechanically but also look good.

Xioneer, a renowned German-Austrian company specialized in soluble support filaments and post-processing solutions for FFF 3D printing, made sure that the Xioneer PVA support filament would be easy to use and reliable. Its speed of dissolution will largely depend on the volume of the 3D printed object, as well as on the amount and the temperature of the water. Higher water temperature (up to 70 °C) will make the support structures dissolve faster but it should be kept in mind what temperatures the main material is able to withstand without deforming. For example, with PLA the water temperature should not exceed 40 ºC. Analogically, the bed and extrusion temperatures should also be adjusted according to the main material of the print.

As far as storage, the Xioneer PVA support filament should be stored in a cool and dry environment (15-25 °C) and away from UV light to ensure the filament's optimal shelf life. Since PVA is a water soluble material, it is especially susceptible to moisture absorption. Once the spool is removed from its original vacuum bag packaging, it should be stored in a vacuum sealed container with a filament drying capsule or in the DryBox EZ by Xioneer, a professional filament storage solution that ensures humidity is kept away from the material. Should the Xioneer PVA filament absorb moisture, it must be dried in a filament dryer prior to printing in order to prevent quality issues and extrusion problems.

The manufacturer recommends printing the PVA support material on a bed heated to ≥60 °C, largely depending on the recommended printing parameters of the main material (ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PET, PLA or TPU). The maximum extrusion temperature of 225 ºC should not be exceeded for this filament for a prolonged period.

Since the PVA support filament is a hydrosoluble material, it can be disposed of through the household drain with an excess of water.
