The BVOH support material was developed and manufactured by Xioneer, a renowned German-Austrian company specialized in soluble support filaments and post-processing solutions for FFF 3D printing.

BVOH (butanediol vinyl alcohol copolymer) is, together with PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), a very popular support material characterized by its compatibility with many 3D printing materials such as ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PET, PLA, TPU. This wide range of polymers it can be used with makes BVOH a great help when it comes to the additive manufacturing of parts with complex geometries. Furthermore, thanks to being soluble, BVOH ensures that the part willl have an excellent surface finish once the support structures have been removed. This is especially important for parts that need to be presentable, something that is much more difficult to achieve with breakaway support materials.

The speed of dissolution of the Xioneer BVOH support filament will largely depend on the volume of the 3D printed object, as well as on the amount and the temperature of the water. Higher water temperature (up to 70 °C) will make the support structures dissolve faster but it should be kept in mind what temperatures the main material is able to withstand without deforming. For example, if the Xioneer BVOH filament is used as a support material with PLA, the water temperature should not exceed 40 ºC. Analogically, the bed and extrusion temperatures should also be adjusted according to the principal material of the print.

The manufacturer recommends printing the BVOH support material on a bed heated to ≥60 °C, largely depending on the recommended printing parameters of the main material (ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PET, PLA or TPU). The maximum extrusion temperature of 230 ºC should not be exceeded for this filament for a prolonged period.

As far as storage, the Xioneer BVOH support filament should be stored in a cool and dry environment (15-25 °C) and away from UV light to ensure the filament's optimal shelf life. Since BVOH is a water soluble material, it is especially susceptible to moisture absorption. Once the spool is removed from its original vacuum bag packaging, it should be stored in a vacuum sealed container with a filament drying capsule or in the DryBox EZ by Xioneer, a professional filament storage solution that ensures humidity is kept away from the material. Should the Xioneer BVOH filament absorb moisture, it must be dried in a filament dryer prior to printing in order to prevent quality issues and extrusion problems.

Since the BVOH support filament is a hydrosoluble material, it can be disposed of through the household drain with an excess of water.
