The PLA Glitter Smartfil, a product by the Spanish company Smart Materials, is a semi-rigid and biodegradable filament, as it originates from natural sources such as corn, potato, or sugar cane. It is mixed with glitter, making it perfect for concealing layer lines and giving the printed pieces a bright metallic finish, which is a very distinctive feature of this filament. PLA Glitter is available in many attractive colours: silver, red, blue, green, violet, and black.
PLA Glitter is part of the PLA Smartfil filament family and is made with high-quality PLA. PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the most commonly used 3D printing materials as it is known for its ease of printing and can be used in open printers. One of PLA's many advantages is that it doesn't produce warping and doesn't require high printing temperatures (190-210 °C), meaning it doesn’t require a heated bed. PLA Glitter, as part of the PLA family of filaments, shares all these characteristics.
PLA Glitter is made with high-quality PLA, no recycled or reclaimed material is used, meaning it has a purity of 99%. Additionally, it is fully stabilised and has a diameter variability of +/- 0.03 mm; hence the pieces printed with this filament have truly incredible resolution. It is also important to note that the parts are easy to post-process as they can be sanded, polished, and painted.
It should be noted that, although part of the PLA Smartfil filament family, PLA Glitter is not suitable for food contact and is primarily used for producing decorative pieces or prototypes due to its characteristic glittery finish. To prevent moisture absorption, store PLA Smartfil in a dry, sealed plastic bag with a filament drying capsule or in an airtight container. Inline filament dryers are recommended during printing, and if needed, drying the filament at 50 ºC for at least 4 hours before printing will ensure optimal print quality.
