TPU filament with carbon fibre is a material developed by Smart Materials, a well-known Spanish company that manufactures filaments for 3D printing. Its product range includes both conventional and industrial materials.

TPU filament with carbon fibre is a thermoplastic elastomer reinforced with carbon fibres. Thermoplastic Polyurethane is obtained by modifying the Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE), resulting in a material with greater rigidity, compatible with most FDM 3D printers on the market, whether they have a direct extrusion system or bowden, being a clear advantage over TPE.

In addition, due to the carbon fibre filler in its composition, the carbon fibre TPU filament offers enhanced properties, high tensile strength, high heat tolerance and higher chemical resistance compared to standard TPU without reinforcement.

Another property of the carbon fibre filler in this material is its electrical conductivity. This electrical conductivity does not refer to the electrical conductivity that can be seen in a copper wire, but conducts only what is necessary to conduct electrostatic electricity (ESD). Thanks to this property, TPU filament with carbon fibre is an ideal filament for protecting or supporting objects sensitive to electrostatic current discharges.

If a higher electrical conductivity is required in a flexible material, we recommend the use of conductive Filaflex.

In order to achieve the highest possible electrostatic conductivity, it is recommended to use the highest possible extrusion temperature recommended by the manufacturer (245 ºC).

It is recommended to use some adhesive for the printing base (Magigoo, DimaFix or 3DLac) so that the first layer of TPU filament with carbon fibre adheres properly. Although it is not essential to use hot base, we recommend a temperature between 45 and 60 ºC, a printing temperature of 215 - 245 ºC and the layer fan at 100%. In case of printing problems due to slipping of the filament in the head, it is advisable not to use retraction and to increase the flow in case the extrusion is intermittent.

Due to the carbon fibre content, this filament is abrasive, so the use of standard brass nozzles is not recommended. It is recommended to use a hardened steel nozzle such as E3D or Brozzl. For the same reason, the filament should be removed from the extruder as soon as possible after printing and cleaning filament should be used.
