The PLLA filament is an environmentally friendly filament manufactured by 3D4Makers, a Dutch brand specialized in innovative materials for FDM 3D printing. The key features of the PLLA filament are its high transparency and the fact that it is biodegradable, industrially compostable (NF EN 13432:2000 standard) and 100 % biobased on non-GMO renewable vegetal resources (NF EN 16785-1 standard)by means of synthesis by fermentation.
The 3D4Makers PLLA is characterized by relative stiffness, good resistance to mild solvents and high crystallinity (60-70%), and it exhibits mechanical properties similar to those of polystyrene. This filament also has an excellent adhesion between layers, which translated to improved impact resistance, strength and durability. Furthermore, the PLLA filament extrudes smoothly thanks to the fact that the 3D4Makers filaments do not come into contact with water during the production process and are directly packaged in a vacuum packaging.
PLLA is also known for its biocompatibility, which makes it popular in bioengineering research applications, medical applications in the research phase or food applications such as food packaging. This 3D4Makers PLLA filament meets the European regulations EC No. 1935/2004, EC No. 2023/2006 and EC No. 10/2011 concerning plastic materials and articles coming into contact with food.

The 3D4Makers PLLA filament should be extruded at a temperature of 180-220 ºC onto a bed heated to 40-60 ºC at a speed of 15-30 mm/s. The recommended bed material is a PEI sheet, a carbon fiber plate or a glass plate. Adhesion to the build surface can be improved with the help of Magigoo.
The PLLA filament should be stored in a cool and dry place, in a sealed bag with a desiccant, such as the Slice Engineering filament drying capsule, in a vacuum sealed container or in a filament drying case. If stored improperly, the filament will absorb moisture from the air, which can lead to quality degradation of the material and failed prints. In case the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried before printing for 3 hours at 60 ºC in a filament dryer.
