Thermoactive PLA that changes color when exposed to temperatures of above 32 ºC.

The PLA Thermoactive filament by R3D exhibits remarkable features by enabling striking color transformations in response to temperature shifts. Specifically designed for creative endeavors, this filament presents a vibrant array of color possibilities, offering a wide spectrum for innovative applications. Notably, the thermo color change characteristic of this PLA filament initiates its vivid color alteration once the temperature surpasses 32 ℃, providing an exciting and dynamic element for producing captivating and visually engaging products.

Thermoactive filaments, also called thermochromic filaments, are created by blending thermochromic compounds into base thermoplastic material, in this case PLA, during manufacturing. These compounds react to temperature changes, causing color or transparency shifts in the filament. This reversible reaction allows the filament to return to its original state when temperatures normalize. Thermoactive filaments enable 3D prints to display captivating color-changing or transparency effects, ideal for creative uses.

PLA (polylactic acid) filament is renowned for its eco-friendly nature, derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. This biodegradable filament showcases minimal warping during printing, making it ideal for use on 3D printers without a heated bed. Known for its ease of use, sustainability and versatility, PLA filament appeals to both hobbyists and professionals within the 3D printing community.

R3D is a brand founded in 2013 and one of the biggest filament manufacturers in the world with a daily output of more than 8000 kg. Their materials are high quality, reliable and environmentally friendly thanks to the spool and box made of recycled material.

Elongation at break (%) 3
Flexural strength (MPa) 98
Flexural modulus (MPa) 3150

The recommended printing temperature for the PLA Thermoactive filament ranges between 190 and 210 ºC, and the best bed temperature is 0-60 ºC. The recommended printing speed is 50-70 mm/s.

Proper storage of the PLA Thermoactive filament is essential, as processing damp filament can lead to polymer chain degradation, fragility, poor layer adhesion, stringing, and oozing. It's best to store the filament in a sealed bag with desiccant or in a vacuum-sealed filament container.
