Self-lubricated material with tribological properties composed of aramid fibers and polyamide mix.

The Nylon AF80 Aramid filament is the new nylon based material developed by Fillamentum. In its catalog we can also find the Nylon-carbon fiber CF15, with carbon fibers, or the Nylon FX256 filament, with a complete polyamide composition (PA 12). The Nylon AF80 Aramid filament is a material created for FDM 3D printing composed of aramid fibers and a mixture of polyamides (nylon AF80), that make up a self-lubricated material with tribological properties.

The parts manufactured in Nylon AF80 are indicated for applications that require to support continuous sliding and friction resistance. Thanks to the self-lubricating properties, movements with low friction and therefore fast and accurate are achieved, resulting in less wear. This allows in certain industrial environments the replacement of certain pieces manufactured in inappropriate materials from the tribological point of view, increasing productivity in certain processes where the pieces printed on Nylon AF80 intervene due to the increased life of the pieces, which causes a lower replacement of the pieces in said process. For this reason it is an ideal material for parts that face constant friction, especially in industrial environments (bearings, guides, bearings, etc.).

Aramid is a robust synthetic fiber that is resistant to impacts, abrasion, organic solvents and heat. By its nature, it is widely used in the military, aeronautical or naval sectors among others (ballistic compounds, bulletproof vests, fire protection equipment, etc.). In many cases it is used as a substitute for asbestos. Aramid fibers, however, are sensitive to moisture and UV rays.

The reinforcement of these fibers together with the properties of the AF80 nylon give the Nylon AF80 Aramid filament the following properties:

This filament manufactured by Fillamentum is very useful for different branches of engineering, in which they can be used to create prototypes, as well as to print 3D parts that will undergo constant tension, impacts, or friction with other elements.

In addition, it doesn't contain restricted substances (it isn't harmful to the environment), although it's not recommended to use it for parts that will be in contact with food.

In addition to all its properties, this filament has been developed to be printed with some ease; compared to other nylon filaments that pose difficulties when printing 3D parts. The recommended printing temperature is between 235 and 260 ºC, with a hot bed temperature between 80 and 105 ºC. To facilitate 3D printing with this material, it is recommended to use a suitable glue for polyamides such as Magigoo PA.

Note also the good adhesion between layers when printing in 3D with this filament.

To achieve good finishes with this filament, it's advisable to generate a thick Brim around the piece and use a glue suitable for polyamides such as Magigoo PA. It's also advisable to use an industrial printer or heated camera to maintain the temperature during printing and achieve slow cooling of the material (Nylon AF80 Aramid) after printing is finished; thus avoiding one of the main problems of printing with Nylon filaments: warping. It's also not recommended to use the layer fan, since rapid cooling of the printed part could lead to warping.

The filaments should be kept in an airtight bag with silica gel sachets or desiccants. Another option, more suitable in the case of technical filaments with hygroscopic properties, would be to store the filament in a storage box such as Polybox Edition II or in vacuum containers such as those offered by PrintDry. In this way, it will remain at the optimum level of humidity. If wet, the optimum level can be reached again by exposing the filament at a temperature of 80 ° C for approximately 3 hours, or using the PrintDry filament dryer, a device for drying the filaments evenly, improving and speeding up the process of dried.

Using the filament with a higher degree of humidity than recommended may cause failure during printing, poor adhesion of the layers, fragility in the printed part, etc. Because the aramid fibers that reinforce this filament can be abrasive, 3D printing using wear-resistant nozzles (hardened steel nozzle, stainless steel nozzle, ruby tip nozzle, etc.) is recommended.
