PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) is an amorphous high performance polymer known for its high thermal and chemical resistance, and mainly used in the automotive, aerospace, and plumbing sectors. The honey-colored Ultrafuse PPSU filament was developed by BASF especially for FFF 3D printing. It is based on BASF’s Ultrason materials designed for maintaining stiffness and dimensional stability even when used in very high temperatures.
The Ultrafuse PPSU filament is ideal for high temperature applications where other plastics such as Nylon, PC, POM or PET cannot preserve their dimensional stability and mechanical properties well enough to meet the criteria.
Parts produced with the Ultrafuse PPSU filament have great layer adhesion and, as a result, balanced flexural strength between z- and x-direction. This is a valuable property, as most parts 3D printed with the FFF technology show mechanical limitations in the z-direction. Another aspect where the Ultrafuse PPSU filament stands out from among other materials are mechanical strength and high heat distortion temperature. It is capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 220 ºC in the short term and up to 180 ºC in the long term, with no signs of creep damage. The Ultrafuse PPSU filament is also resistant to hot water, coolants, fuel, fluorine, as well as hot oil (up to 170 ºC). Furthermore, the Ultrafuse PPSU has inherent flame retardant properties, which, combined with all the other mechanical, chemical and thermal properties, makes it a suitable material for the aerospace industry as well as the automotive sector.

In order to ensure optimal quality and performance of parts 3D printed with the Ultrafuse PPSU filament, the filament should be extruded at a temperature of 390-410 ºC, on a bed heated to 200-220 ºC and a chamber heated to 170-210 ºC. The recommended printing speed is 25-100 mm/s and the best build surface is a glass surface or a reinforced build sheet.
Protecting filaments from humidity by storing them properly is crucial to obtaining parts with optimal properties. Before and after printing, the Ultrafuse PPSU filament should be stored in its original package or in a vacuum sealed bag with a filament drying capsule inside for even better results. An equally good storage option is a vacuum sealed container or an intelligent filament container. During printing the filament should be stored in a closed container such as the Fiber Three drying case or an inline filament dryer. If the Ultrafuse absorbs excess moisture, it should be dried in a vacuum dryer at 125 °C for 8 hours.
