Raise3D is one of the leaders in industrial FDM printers and accessories. Focused on finding cutting-edge AM solutions for flexible manufacturing, they seek to help companies improve their competitive advantage. Raise3D also manufactures 3D printing filaments. Its portfolio includes a wide range of basic, engineering and advanced filaments such as PLA, PC, PVA, ABS, ASA, PETG, TPU and PA.

PA is an engineering thermoplastic, more commonly known as nylon. It is an affordable and extremely versatile material that is widely used in 3D printing due to its durability, flexibility, thermoplasticity and resistance to abrasion, friction, corrosion and chemicals.

Among the unalloyed nylons, some stand out such as PA12, a polyamide used in automotive, machinery and industry as it combines mechanical strength, flexibility and superior chemical resistance (oils, greases, petrol...) and thermal resistance. Its tensile deformation at breakage is greater than 50%, which makes it one of the filaments with the highest resistance to fatigue. The main applications are usually in metal replacement elements, such as bearings, gears, pulleys, sprockets and in industrial damping machinery. Among the fibre-reinforced nylons, carbon fibre reinforced nylons stand out.

The Raise3D PA12 CF support filament is a support material specially developed for the printing process with carbon fibre reinforced filaments such as Raise3D's PA12 CF, the filament used in the Raise3D E2CF device.

Virtually odourless and water insoluble, during the 3D printing process it creates a stable support structure, providing adequate adhesion to the surface of printed parts and counteracting the tendency to warp. This significantly improves the surface quality of the overhangs and cavities of 3D printed parts.

Thanks to this filament, it is possible to manufacture highly complex 3D printed parts with a technical material such as Raise3D's PA12 CF, using the PA12 CF support filament as a support material.

Once printing is complete, the support structure can be easily removed (separated) from the printed parts by hand. Although developed to work in combination with the Raise3D PA12 CF filament, this support material exhibits broad compatibility with many other carbon fibre reinforced filaments certified by Raise3D OFP (Open Filament Program) and is much more cost-effective compared to other water-soluble support materials.

Material Compatibility

  • PA12 CF - very good.
  • PA base filaments - very good.
  • PA base filaments and CF reinforcement - very good.
  • Other filaments with CF - depends on their geometry.

This filament is developed as a support for reinforced filaments such as Raise3D's PA12 CF. When working with carbon fibre-loaded materials, it is recommended to use resistant nozzles, such as the hardened Raise3D nozzle. In case of working with the Raise E2CF equipment, the use of a specific nozzle would not be required, since this 3D printer is optimised to work with this type of reinforced materials.

Preparations before printing with PA12 CF support filament

Due to its hygroscopic characteristics, PA12 CF backing filament will absorb moisture when exposed to air. It is essential to dry the filament before printing. One method for drying filament is to use an oven at 80 ℃ for at least 6 hours. For filaments stored in a dry environment, a skilled user can dry them according to the conditions of the material at the time. During printing, filaments should be placed in a storage box such as the PolyBox to avoid exposure to air.

Before inserting the filament, the user should straighten the end of the material as much as possible, so that the filament runs smoothly through the sensor.

Last but not least, before printing begins, Magigoo PA glue should be applied to the printing surface for additional adhesion. If glue has been previously applied, the user can decide whether or not to apply the glue again depending on the remaining adhesion on the surface.

Disposal of the material

The material must be disposed of by incineration in a chemical incinerator in accordance with national and regional requirements. Since empty boxes may retain product residues, the user must follow the warnings on the label even after emptying.

Warnings

  • Reactivity: The substance is stable under normal conditions of storage and handling.
  • Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature in closed containers under normal conditions of storage and handling.
  • Materials to avoid: Strong oxidizing agents.
  • Hazardous decomposition products: Oxides of carbon.
