Nanoe is a renowned French company that stands out mainly in the production of ceramic and metallic powders. That is why they have created Zetamix, a brand of filaments made from high purity ceramic or metallic powders to produce fully ceramic or metallic parts. Zetamix filaments allow the manufacture of parts with mechanical properties that enable their use in technical applications.

Zetamix filaments consist of fine powder (5-20 μm) and a thermoplastic binder system. The binder material mixed with the H13 powder allows for a strong filament with a certain flexibility that is perfect for use with FDM/FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) 3D printers.

H13 is a tool steel with an excellent combination of hardness and fracture toughness, maintaining these properties at high temperatures. It is also noted for its high level of ductility, thermal and electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.

Thanks to these properties, H13 steel is commonly used for hot or cold working tooling applications and enables the production of a wide variety of tools, such as extrusion dies or injection moulds.

With Zetamix H13 filament it is possible to produce all-metal parts. To do this, the 3D printed parts must undergo a debinding and sintering process. The steps to follow are as follows:

  1. Printing: Zetamix filaments can be easily printed on virtually any direct extruder printer, as they require printing temperatures between 150 and 180 ºC and a base temperature of between 30º and 40 ºC.

  2. Debinding: Debinding consists of thermal debinding in an argon and nitrogen atmosphere prior to sintering.
  3. Sintering: Finally, the part must be sintered by heat treatment in a high-temperature furnace.

Thanks to Zetamix metal filaments, complex all-metal parts can be produced economically and easily. Parts 3D printed with Zetamix H13 have a density of up to 90% compared to machined or cast parts.

Due to its properties and the possibility to produce metal parts with complex geometries, Zetamix H13 is a suitable filament for various applications in the industrial sector, such as the production of internal tooling.

When designing parts to be manufactured with Zetamix H13, it is recommended to take into account the information contained in the Design Guide provided by the manufacturer. It can also be very useful the material use guide, where you can find the parameters recommended by the manufacturer and the steps to follow in the debinding and sintering processes. Both documents can be downloaded in the "Downloads" section.

The printing parameters recommended by the manufacturer are as follows:

  • Printing temperature: 180 ºC
  • Base temperature: 30 ºC
  • Nozzle size: 0.4 - 1.0 mm
  • Layer thickness: 0.20 mm (0.1 - 1 mm possible by adjusting the print speed)
  • Print speed: 20 mm/s (recommended)
  • Shrinkage: 16 - 17 %
  • Perimeters: At least 2
  • Filling: 20 % - 100 % (the number of layers made over the filling will depend on the density of the filling and the pattern used).
  • Substrates: Can be printed using the same material or a soluble material using a double extrusion system. For optimum surface quality at least 3 layers should be printed on the substrate structure.

Due to the high content of abrasive particles, it is recommended to use a hardened steel nozzle or ruby-tipped nozzle for printing this filament.

Zetamix metal filaments are compatible with direct extruders only. The spool should be placed on top of the printer so that the path between the spool and the extruder is as straight as possible to avoid breaking the filament.

It is advisable to reduce the extruder tension to a minimum to prevent the filament from deteriorating.

Debinding

The parts must be placed in a crucible with refractory powder to support the shrinkage of the part and to serve as a support during the process. The parts are then heat treated by heating the parts from 50 ºC to 650 ºC at a rate of 10 ºC/h in Argon atmosphere with 2.5 % hydrogen.

Sintering

The sintering process of the material must be carried out in a high-temperature furnace:

  • Heat up to 1350°C at 50°C/h.,

  • Hold at 1350°C and a holding time of 2h in Argon atmosphere with 2.5 % hydrogen.
  • Cool to room temperature.
