Nanoe is a renowned French company that stands out mainly in the production of ceramic and metallic powders. That is why they have created Zetamix, a brand of filaments made from high purity ceramic or metallic powders to produce fully ceramic or metallic parts. Zetamix filaments allow the manufacture of parts with mechanical properties that enable their use in technical applications.

Zetamix currently has three ceramic filaments for technical applications: White Zirconia, Black Zirconia and Alumina; and two metallic filaments: 316L and H30 Steel.

Zetamix 316L is a 316L stainless steel filament developed for FDM 3D printing.

This filament is made of a high percentage of 316L stainless steel powder combined with a binder material. The nature of its composition allows for a strong filament with a certain flexibility. These properties mean that this filament can be printed on almost any FDM 3D printer on the market, bearing in mind that it is recommended to process with direct type extruders to avoid material breakage.

In order to achieve metal parts, the printed parts have to go through a debinding and sintering process:

  1. Printing: Zetamix filaments can be easily printed on virtually any direct extruder printer, as they require a printing temperature of 120-130 °C and a base temperature of 40°C.

  2. Debinding: Debinding consists of thermal debinding in an argon atmosphere prior to sintering.
  3. Sintering: Finally, the part is sintered by heat treatment in an atmosphere of pure hydrogen to obtain a completely metallic part.

316L steel has high corrosion resistance, impact resistance and is resistant to elevated temperatures. The material is also an excellent thermal conductor.

In addition to these properties, parts 3D printed with Zetamix 316L are up to 95% denser than machined or cast parts after debinding and sintering.

Zetamix 316L is therefore an ideal choice for a wide range of applications in the industrial sector, such as tooling manufacturing.

3D Print

When 3D printing this material, it is recommended to take into account the information contained in the material's user guide. The guide can be downloaded in the "Downloads" section.

The printing parameters recommended by the manufacturer are as follows:

  • Printing temperature: 120-130 ºC
  • Base temperature: 40 ºC
  • Nozzle size: 0.4 - 1.0 mm
  • Layer thickness: 0.20 mm (0.1 - 1 mm possible by adjusting the print speed)
  • Print speed: 15-50 mm/s
  • Shrinkage: 13  ±1 %
  • Perimeters: At least 2
  • Filling: 20 % - 100 % (the number of layers made over the filling depends on the filling density and the pattern used).
  • Substrates: Can be printed using the same material or a soluble material using a double extrusion system. For optimum surface quality, at least 3 layers should be printed on the substrate structure.

Zetamix metal filaments are compatible with direct extruders only. The spool should be placed on top of the printer so that the path between the spool and the extruder is as straight as possible to avoid breaking the filament.

It is advisable to reduce the extruder tension to a minimum to prevent the filament from deteriorating.

Debinding

Two-step debinding process: chemical debinding (24 hours in acetone bath at 40 °C) and thermal debinding: 50 °C to 650 °C at 10 °C/h in argon mixture with 2.5 % hydrogen atmosphere.

Sintering

The sintering process of the material must be carried out in a high-temperature furnace.

  • Heat up to 1350 °C at 50 °C/h.

  • Hold at 1350 °C for 2 h in an argon mixture with 2.5 % hydrogen atmosphere.
  • Cool to room temperature.
