VXL EX dissolving powder Xioneer
Water-soluble support materials (such as PVA, BVOH or PVOH) tend to clog the nozzle when extruded and rapidly absorb humidity from the surrounding air, requiring drying before use. Furthermore, their compatibility with build materials is quite limited. These reasons led Xioneer to develop the VXL family of alkaline soluble support materials, with the VXL EX dissolving powder created specifically to dissolve the VXL support materials quickly, easily, safely and with excellent results.
VXL EX is a safe non-caustic detergent with a pH of <11.5 when mixed with water to create a mildly alkaline solution. To prepare the dissolving mix, 100 g of VXL EL is added to 4 liters of tap water previously introduced into the Vortex EZ support removal station. These proportions create the minimum 2.5 % concentration of VXL EX required for an effective dissolution of the support structures. The VXL EX powder is compatible with the VXL support materials by Xioneer - VXL 70, VXL 90, VXL 111 and VXL 130. It is recommended to use 100 g of VXL EX per each 100 g of support material to be removed. With the VXL EX powder it can take as short as 30 minutes to dissolve supports and the time will increase proportionally to the complexity of the 3D printed part.
The VXL EX support dissolving powder is not only quick and easy to use but also environmentally friendly. Once the supports have been removed, the resulting solution of water, VXL EX and dissolved polymer can be neutralized with 5-10 g of citric acid per each liter of the solution, and safely disposed of in accordance with the local wastewater regulations, normally into the household drain. This creates a hustle-free and efficient post-processing workflow for the user, resulting in parts with an aesthetically pleasing surface finish.
The Xioneer VXL EX support dissolving powder should be stored in its original container, tightly closed to avoid agglutination. The container should be placed in a cool, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight/UV radiation, and away from food, drink and animal feeding. The user should wear appropriate protective equipment when handling the VXL EX powder. Protectice garments, gloves and goggles should be worn to avoid skin and eye irritation. In order to avoid respiratory irritation, adequate ventilation of the work are should be provided, e.g by means of local exhaust ventilation or by technical means if local exhaust ventilation is unavailable or insufficient.
Before the user proceeds to the dissolution of the supports, the VXL EX powder technical and safety datasheet should be thoroughly studied (available in Downloads section). Another thing to keep in mind is the softening point of the model material. To avoid deformation of the main part, it is important to keep the dissolving temperature 20-30 °C below the softening temperature (= glass transition temperature Tg) of the main material.
In order to remove the supports from a model with the help of VXL EX, the user should follow these steps:
Before being disposed of, the solution of water, VXL EX and dissolved support structures must be neutralized. This is done by adding 5-10 g of citric acid per litre of used solution. When foam formation occurs, the solution has reached a neutral pH area and can be disposed of in compliance with local wastewater regulations.
