The BioMed resins by FormLabs were designed for the manufacturing of biocompatible medical grade materials. The applications of the BioMed resins range from prototypes to end-use devices, such as pieces that are in contact with patients’ skin and mucous membrane. BioMed resins comply with ISO 13485 and the ISO standard for biocompatibility.

Apart from the Biomed Clear and Biomed Amber resins, the BioMed family includes the Biomed White Resin resin. BioMed White is a rigid opaque white medical resin designed biocompatible applications and certified to be used for 3D printing pieces that require long term contact with skin or short term contact with mucus membrane. The Biomed White resin was tested for pyrogenicity and Acute Systemic toxicity (USP 151), which makes it safe to use in the vicinity of tissue, bone and dentine (short term uses).

Apart from complying with the ISO 13485 standard and ISO standards for biocompatibility, the BioMed White resin is also USP Class VI certified, which means it is suitable for pharmaceutical and drug delivery applications.

Pieces 3D printed with the FormLabs BioMed White resin can be safely disinfected and sterilized, as they are compatible with many common solvents and disinfectants.

All these features make the FormLabs BioMed White resin ideal for the 3D printing of complex geometries and precise models. The BioMed White resin has versatile applications in the biomedical industry, such as:

  • Custom implant sizing models and molds.
  • Cutting and drilling guides.
  • Biocompatible surgical molds, templates and accessories.
  • Anatomical models suitable for use in the OR.

It should be kept in mind that material properties of the BioMed White resin may differ depending on part design, print orientation, print settings, temperature and disinfection/sterilization practices. The biocompatibility and performance of 3D printed parts should be determined for each application and use. Recommended printing settings, precautions and post processing tips can be consulted in the Downloads section of the product, in the technical datasheet and the instructions documents.

In order to ensure a successful 3D printing process and a correct result, the following usage tips must be followed with FormLabs resins:

Cartridge change

In order to replace the resin cartridge, the top cap of the vent should be closed, and the cartridge should be removed using the handle. Then the new cartridge is inserted and the vent should be opened if a 3D printing process is planned. To avoid staining the 3D printer with resin, this process should always be carried out with the resin tank mounted.

Once the 3D printing process is terminated, the top cap must be closed in order to preserve the properties of the resin. If the printer is not used for some time, the cartridge should be stored in its original box to keep the properties of the resin from degrading.

Resin tank and printer compatibility

The BioMed White resin is compatible with the Form 2, Form 3B/3B+, Form 3BL and Form 4 printers.

Each resin should be used with the appropriate resin tank. Each tank should be changed after using 2L of resin.

Proper storage of resin tanks

Image 2: Proper storage of resin tanks. Source: FormLabs.

To protect and properly store the resin after each printing, a lid should be placed on the tank to ensure a perfect closure. Then, the tank should be stored in the original box to avoid exposure to UV light. The tank should not be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, otherwise the tank will lose its qualities and cause continuous failed impressions.

Resin contamination

There may be leftovers from the previous 3D printing process left in the resin tank. This is why it is recommended to remove leftovers from the tank by using a spatula at an angle of 45 º.

To further ensure that the resin has no contaminants, the resin can be sifted through a piece of paper of 190 µm and then poured back into the tank.

Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), used in the washing and post-processing of 3D printed parts, should be changed regularly. In case of using the FormLabs Finish Kit, the IPA should be changed when it is so saturated with resin particles, that 3D printed pieces are still sticky after washing. When that happens, all the liquid should be removed, the container should be cleaned and new IPA should be added. New IPA should never be added to old IPA.

The Form Wash automated washing center by FormLabs indicates when it is time to replace the isopropyl alcohol.
