3DxTech specialises in the development of high performance polymers for the industrial sector. Most of the materials from the 3DxTech catalog are characterized by high mechanical strength, chemical resistance and high flammability temperatures, as well as other specialized properties. One of such materials is the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament - an ESD safe formulation of PPS.

PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) is known to be one of the most chemically resistant thermoplastic available as it proves insoluble in any known solvent under 200 ºC. Other benefits offered by the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament include:

  • Inherent flame resistance and self-extinguishing properties

  • Minimal contribution to outgassing and ionic contamination

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden transfer of electrical charge from one object to another. It can result in a visible and even audible spark, and cause catastrophic damage to sensitive electronic devices and integrated circuits. ESD-safe materials minimise that risk by providing a path for the electorstatic discharge to safely evacuate along its surface, causing no damage. The 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament has these properties thanks to its consistent surface resistivity of 107 to 109 Ohm/sq, which means parts 3D printed with it will act as an ESD dissipator. Furthermore, the dielectric constant and dissipation factor of the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament prove stable over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. Interestingly enough, studies conducted by 3DxTech have shown that increased extruder temperatures can achieve higher levels of conductivity and lower temperatures lead to increased insulative properties.

Nevertheless, this trend is largely dependent on the set-up of each 3D printer and on the properties of the part itself, such as the geometry and thickness.

This exceptional mix of mechanical, thermal and chemical properties makes the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament ideal for applications where the 3D printed parts need to maintain their mechanical properties and functionality even in the presence of elevated temperatures and all kinds of solvents, as well as dissipate electrostatic discharge in case it occurs. Som example applications for the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament would be semi conductive HDD components, wafer handling, jigs, casings and connectors in the electric/electronic, automotive and oil and gas industries, as well as all kinds of industrial conveying, metering and sensing applications.

Complex structures and geometries can be created with the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament with the help of the ThermaX break-away HTS High Temp Support by 3DxTech, a material is specially designed to work with complex, high temperature filaments.

In order for the parts 3D printed with the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament to achieve their full thermal, chemical and mechanical resistance, they should be annealed in the following way:

  1. First, the part should be placed in a cool, room-temp oven. Supports can be left on the part if there is a risk of part warping without them.
  2. The oven temperature should be set to 80°C and allowed to stabilize for 1 hour.
  3. Next, the oven temperature should be raised to 130°C and allowed to stabilize 2-3 hours or longer depending upon the size/thickness of the part.
  4. Lastly, the oven heat should be turned off and the part should be allowed to cool to room temperature.

The 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament should be printed at a temperature of 315-345 ºC, on a bed heated to 120-160 ºC. It is also recommended to use a 3D printed with a heated chamber (60-90 ºC) if possible as it can help prevent warping. Another way to prevent warping and improve adhesion of the 3D printed part to the printing surface (especially with large parts) is to use the Nano Polymer adhesive designed especially for high temperature technical materials.

The 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament should be stored properly in order to prevent it from absorbing excess moisture. Humidity is the biggest enemy of filaments as it can result in extrusion problems, poor surface quality of the 3D printed part and a deterioration in its mechanical properties. The best way to store the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament is in a sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum sealed container or in an intelligent filament container. During printing, the Fiber Three drying case can be used. If the 3DXSTAT ESD PPS filament absorbs too much moisture, it should dried in a filament dryer for 4 hours at 110 ºC.
