The renowned North American manufacturer 3DXtech has an impressive portfolio of technical filaments for professional applications, suitable for the most demanding industrial and engineering environments. The ThermaX PPS filament is part of the Thermax group of materials characterized by excellent thermal properties, great chemical resistance and superior mechanical performance.

PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) is a high performance polymer known as one of the most chemically resistant thermoplastic materials out there. For that reason PPS is extremely popular in the automotive industry as well as in chemical processing, in the oil and gas sector, and in the production of electronics. PPS is inherently flame retardant and self extinguishing, and completely insoluble in any known solvent under 200 ºC. Furthermore, the ThermaX filament shows stable dielectric constant and dissipation factor over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, as well as long-term hydrolytic stability (low moisture absorption). This outstanding mix of thermo-mechanical and chemical resilience makes the ThermaX PPS filament ideal for various end-use applications in hostile environments where the 3D printed parts needs to exhibit dimensional stability and mechanical resistance in high temperatures and when in contact with various chemical agents. The ThermaX PPS filamet is especially suitable for electric and electronic applications.

Complex parts can be created with the ThermaX HTS2 high temperature support material, in which case a 3D printer with dual extrusion is required. Something important to keep in mind is that parts 3D printed with it must be annealed (post-crystallized) to increase the crystallinity of the material and maximize its mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance. The annealing procedure takes around 2-4 hours and involves heating up the 3D printed part at around 130 ºC. Exact annealing instructions are given in the Usage Tips section.

The ThermaX PPS filament should be printed at a temperature of 315-345 ºC, on a bed heated to 120-160 ºC. It is also recommended to use a 3D printed with a heated chamber (60-90 ºC) if possible as it can help prevent warping. Another way to prevent warping and improve adhesion of the 3D printed part to the printing surface (especially with large parts) is to use the Nano Polymer adhesive designed especially for high temperature technical materials. It is not recommended to use the cooling fan with this filament, and the printing speed should be set to 16 mm/s as a starting point.

In order for the 3D printed parts to achieve their full thermal, chemical and mechanical resistance, they should be annealed in the following way:

  1. First, the part should be placed in a cool, room-temp oven. Supports can be left on the part if there is a risk of part warping without them.
  2. The oven temperature should be set to 80°C and allowed to stabilize for 1 hour.
  3. Next, the oven temperature should be raised to 130°C and allowed to stabilize 2-3 hours or longer depending upon the size/thickness of the part.
  4. Lastly, the oven heat should be turned off and the part should be allowed to cool to room temperature.

The ThermaX PPS filament should be stored properly in order to prevent it from absorbing excess moisture. Humidity is the biggest enemy of filaments as it can result in extrusion problems, poor surface quality of the 3D printed part and a deterioration in its mechanical properties. The best way to store the ThermaX PPS filament is in a sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum sealed container or in an intelligent filament container. During printing, the Fiber Three drying case can be used. If the ThermaX PPS filament absorbs too much moisture, it should dried in a filament dryer for 4 hours at 100 ºC.
