Composite filament filled with natural spruce fibers for an authentic wooden appearance.

The Timberfill Redheart filament is part of the Timberfill family of materials by the Czech brand Fillamentum. The Timberfill filaments are biopolymers containing real wood fibers which gives the 3D printed parts an authentic look and temporary smell of wood. The Timberfill Redheart filament is a PLA composite filled with 15 % of non-abrasive natural spruce fibers and biodegradable in industrial composters (months). It should be noted that the color tone of the printed parts may vary slightly from part to part due to the natural origin of the material.

The 3D printed parts are characterized by an aesthetically appealing wood finish and when extruded, the Timberfill Redheart filament gives out a pleasant spruce smell that lingers in the part for a while after. The filament is characterized by ease of printing just like standard PLA, even at high speeds, due to its very low tendency to warp or shrink. The temperatures resistance of parts 3D printed with the Timberfill Redheart filament can be increased from 55 ºC to 80 ºC by submitting the part to the process of annealing.

Another advantage offered by the Timberfill Redheart filament is that the 3D printed parts can be tinted or post-processed with the help of sandpaper, and can be safely used in electrical and electronic equipment. These properties combined with the aromatic nature of this filament make the Timberfill Redheart filament ideal for the 3D printing of decorative objects or non-functional prototypes.

It is necessary to follow a few steps to avoid problems during and after printing with Timberfill Redheart filament:

  1. You need to use a nozzle at least 0.4 mm in diameter, although it is best to use a 0.5 mm diameter nozzle. Your printer should have the option of heating the base since it needed 50-60 ºC for the phenomenon of "warping" does not occur. In addition to the base you must place Kapton Tape3DLac or Magigoo to ensure adhesion between the base and the workpiece.
  2. The filament is easily deformed, so it is advisable that the feeder your 3D printer you reduce the pressure on the filament so there are no excessive marks on the  filament. (It is also recommended print with direct extrusion to prevent facture filament itself because of its delicacy).
  3. The optimum temperature of the extruder may vary between 150 and 170 ° C and the recommended print speed is 40-60 mm/s (natural fibres may start to degrade/burn at slower speeds and this could cause jams).
  4. Once you have finished printing, remove the  filament your 3D printer and load PLA filament for about 30 seconds to clean any remaining that may remain within the extruder. If you do this you run the risk that the extruder is locked next time you want to print.

It is absolutely necessary to store Timberfill Redheart filament in a dry environment, in a sealed bag with desiccant or in a smart filament container. If the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried in a filament dryer for 2 hours at 50°C. Processing wet filament can lead to degradation of the polymer chains, brittleness, poor adhesion of layers, stringing, oozing, etc.
