Certified flame retardant PC-ABS blend for engineering and electrical applications.

The Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament is part of the BASF portfolio of engineering materials. Like all Ultrafuse filaments, the PC-ABS FR was manufactured under strict conditions and subjected to meticulous testing to ensure the consistency in diameter, color and properties across batches. Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR is a blend of PC and ABS, two most used thermoplastics for engineering and electrical applications. The Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR is a flame retardant material (halogen free) complying with the following standards:

  • European railway standard for fire safety EN45545-2:2016, R26 (EL 10) for HL1, HL2 and HL3.
  • The UL94 Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances ( V-0) - self-extinguishing category.
  • The GWEPT (glow wire on end product) test - no dripping at 750 ºC for 1.5 mm wall thickness, and 960 ºC for 3 mm wall thickness.

Apart from its flame retardant properties, the Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament yields parts with an outstanding surface finish and strong layer adhesion. It can also be 3D printed at relatively high speeds (up to 90 mm/s).

The Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament combines the best mechanical properties of PC and the benefit of low printing temperatures provided by ABS. PC contributes excellent strength, dimensional stability, stiffness, impact resistance even at low temperatures, as well as good electrical properties and chemical resistance. To that excellent blend of properties, ABS adds excellent impact strength, flexibility, light weight, and great thermal and chemical resistance. As a result of this mix of properties, parts 3D printed with Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR demonstrate outstanding tensile and impact strength, as well as boosted thermal resistance (higher than that of ABS), which helps the Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament fulfill the requirements of the UL94 V-0 standard.

The potential applications of the Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament are certainly the 3D printing of parts that require high impact, chemical and thermal resistance, as well as flame retardancy properties. These applications can include housings for Raspberry Pi, sockets and plugs, housings for handheld devices or power tools, as well as automotive components.

The recommended printing parameters for the Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament are an extrusion temperature of 250-280 °C, a printing speed of 30-90 mm/s, and a bed temperature of 80-100 ºC. In order to reduce the risk of warping, especially with big parts, it is recommended to print the Ultrafuse PC-ABS FR filament in a 3D printer with a passively heated closed chamber, on a glass printing surface with a small amount of an adhesive, for example DimaFix or PrintaFix.

Like all 3D printing filaments, the Ultrafuse ABS should be stored properly in order to be protected from absorbing moisture. Humidity is the worst enemy of filaments and can lead to extrusion problems and poor print quality. The Ultrafuse ABS filament should be stored in a vacuum sealed bag with a filament drying capsule, in an intelligent filament container before and after printing, and in a filament drying device during printing. If the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried at 60 ºC for at least 4 hours, in a vacuum oven.
