Biodegradable PLA-based composite for bone regeneration applications and cell studies.

Colfeed4Print's FOss family of materials includes materials designed for 3D printing of customised, multi-directional interconnected porous structures with specific consistency. One of the materials in this group is the FOss HA filament characterised by in vitro validated biodegradation and bioactivity, as well as good cell adhesion and growth. This filament is ideal for bone regeneration applications and cell studies due to its osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties.

The FOss HA filament is based on polylactic acid (PLA) with 20 % by volume (40 wt. %) of HA (hydroxyapatite) osseoinductive particles highly dispersed inside (the particle size is 3 µm). The hydroxyapatite powder used in the FOss HA filament is a medical-grade, synthetic, high-purity, highly crystalline bioresorbable bone substitute material designed to closely mimic the properties and composition of natural bone.

The main benefits offered by the FOss HA filament are that it can replace the pastes usually applied for bone regeneration, thus allowing the preparation of more accurate and personalized models more efficiently via additive manufacturing. Furthermore, FOss HA has improved hydrophilic properties, which means that it could be impregnated in the patient plasma prior to implantation

Another valuable property of this material is that it can be safely sterilised by ultraviolet light, has an antibacterial effect and allows for multi-directional and customised porosity. The FOss HA filament is easily printable via the FFF 3D printing technology as it doesn't cause any clogging issues.

Just like all Colfeed4Print materials, the FOss HA filament allows for a significant agilization of research by allowing to 3D print precise and highly customized bone-inducing scaffolds

Medical use Medical use

The FOss HA filament is delivered in a vacuum sealed bag with desiccant. Once opened, the filament should be stored properly to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air. The best way to store filaments in a tightly sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum sealed container or in an intelligent filament container. It is recommended to dry the filament before printing at 40-60°C for 2 minutes.

The manufacturer recommends printing FOss HA filament at 155-165 ºC on a bed heated to 40 ºC at a speed of 15-30 mm/s. The use of 1 or 2 skirts around the part (equal to the printing speed) will improve the adhesion of the part to the print bed. More printing tips can be found in the User Guide document in the Downloads section.

It is highly recommended to wear standard safety equipment during the printing and post-processing of parts 3D printed with the FOss HA filament - safety goggles, gloves, breathing equipment and protective garments, according to needs.
