Recommended applications for PLA filament

Thanks to its technical properties and excellent stability during the printing process, PLA filament is ideal for visual applications that do not require high mechanical or thermal resistance.

It is recommended for action figures, miniatures, models, jewelry, decoration, rapid prototypes, and any design requiring precision and aesthetic finish. For large prints, PLA's low thermal contraction prevents warping and makes full use of the available build volume.

To achieve the best results when printing with Prusament PLA filament, it is essential to properly set up the 3D printer and correctly prepare the print surface. Below are key recommendations to improve adhesion, surface finish, and the durability of printed parts in high-quality PLA.

Recommended temperatures

The ideal extruder temperature for Prusament PLA is around 210 °C ± 10 °C. The heated bed can be kept between 40 °C and 60 °C, although printing without a heated bed is also possible if a good adhesive surface is used. No special hotend or closed printer is required.

Print surface preparation

For optimal PLA adhesion, surfaces like smooth PEI, textured or satin, glass, blue tape or glue stick are recommended. The surface should always be clean and free of residues. The best method is to clean with isopropyl alcohol on fragrance-free paper. Hot water with mild soap can also be used. For best results, clean the bed when cold.

Cooling and ventilation

Active cooling is crucial for printing PLA. It is recommended to use a layer fan at 100% to improve bridges, overhangs, and prevent warping. A constant airflow throughout the print helps define fine details.

Print speed

PLA allows high-speed printing without compromising quality. A recommended standard speed is 100%, though it can be adjusted based on the part's complexity and geometry.

Sanding and post-processing

To improve the surface of a PLA printed part, wet sanding is recommended. Dry sanding generates friction and can melt the material, making the process more difficult. Using water prevents overheating and facilitates a smoother finish.

Structural strength

If a more durable part is required, it is recommended to increase the number of perimeters instead of the fill percentage. Most mechanical strength in a 3D print comes from the outer walls. This improves solidity without unnecessarily increasing print time.

These tricks and settings for printing PLA help get the most out of Prusament filament, achieving cleaner, more stable, and precise 3D prints from the first layer.
