Fiberlogy is a renowned Polish manufacturer of 3D printing filaments. Thanks to its modern production line and the know-how of its technical team, Fiberlogy offers filaments of exceptional quality. One of their materials from the Fiberlogy R series is the R Nylon - a PA12 filament made from 100 % recycled material.

The main properties of the R Nylon filament include high flexibility (over 200 % elongation at break), excellent resistance to high temperatures, abrasion, and certain chemicals. Although not as widely used as PA6, PA12 has its properties that make it a go-to material in many specialized applications where the parts need to preserve dimensional stability. Some examples include:

  • Low/high temperature applications (good performance in both).
  • Humid environments (thanks to low moisture absorption).
  • Mechanically stressful conditions (no cracking).
  • Chemically hostile surroundings (hydraulic fluids, oil, fuels, grease, salt water and solvents).

The properties of the R Nylon filament

The idea behind the Fiberlogy R filament line was to create filaments that combine high quality and optimization of production processes, and minimize the negative impact on the ecosystem. The high quality of the Fiberlogy R filaments can be attributed to 2 factors: the raw material is carefully selected and comes from verified sources, and the storing conditions of the filaments are strictly controlled.

All in all, R Nylon is a sustainable alternative to  standard nylon and it offers excellent mechanical, thermal and chemical properties, as well as a great surface quality. Thanks to these features, the R Nylon filament has a wide range of potential applications, for example in the 3D printing of toys, gadgets, prototypes, conceptual models, jewellry, or decorative objects, but also in functional engineering applications in hostile environments.

Nylon is slightly challenging to 3D print, which is why it is important to follow the recommendations of the manufacturer. The tips on how to extrude the R Nylon filament can be found in the Usage Tips section.

The ideal printing temperature for the R Nylon is between 255 ºC and 270 ºC on a bed heated to 100 ºC at a speed of 35-60 mm/s. It is required to print this filament in a closed chamber, with the layer fan set to 0-10 %. The recommended retraction speed for R Nylon is 20-45 mm/s, and the optimal retractions are 2-3 mm for direct extrusion and 4-6 mm for Bowden systems. The recommended printing surface is glass, PVA glue or Magigoo PA.

It is crucial to store the R Nylon filament properly as processing of moist filament may cause degradation of polymer chains, brittleness, poor layer adhesion, stringing and oozing. It is best to store the filament in a tightly sealed bag with a desiccant or in a vacuum sealed filament container. Should the filament absorb excess moisture, it must be dried in a filament dryer at 70 ºC for 4 hours before it can be extruded.
