The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament is the hardest elastomer available in the BASF portfolio of flexible materials and it was based on BASF’s thermoplastic polyurethane Elastollan. The Shore hardness 64D places Ultrafuse TPU 64D in on the “extra hard” end of the hardness spectrum, with a hardness somewhere between a shopping cart wheel and a wooden ruler. The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament preserves a certain degree of rigidity while being somewhat flexible at the same time.

The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament is characterized by excellent resistance to wear and abrasion, very good flexibility at low temperatures, high impact resistance, excellent damping properties, and high resistance to oils, greases, oxygen and ozone.

Despite being a flexible polymer, the Ultrafuse TPU 64D is easy to print on direct drive as well as Bowden style printers. It can be used to 3D print complex geometries and structures with the help of support structures (a 3D printer with dual extrusion is required) and support filaments such as the water soluble Ultrafuse BVOH support. Using a water soluble support allows for a more sustainable and quicker post processing workflow. It also guarantees a more aesthetically pleasing surface finish since no support residues will remain on the surface of the 3D printed part.

The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament was elaborated based on BASF‘s decades of experience in flexible materials. The strict manufacturing and quality control standards ensure maximum reliability, consistent product quality and cost efficiency. The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament is a material very suitable for industrial applications that require rigid parts that can tolerate prolonged forces of impact, wear and tear without the performance of the part being compromised in any way. The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament can also be used as an alternative to ABS parts and rubbers for the manufacturing of tools, jigs and fixtures.

In order to achieve parts with the best properties possible, the following printing parameters should be used: a nozzle temperature of 230-255 ºC, a printing speed of 30-60 mm/s, a glass bed heated to 40-60 ºC. It is also highly recommended to 3D print the Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament in a passively heated closed chamber. The recommended extrusion system to use with the Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament is a direct drive extruder since indirect drive extruders may clog or provide inconsistent throughput with flexible filaments. Nevertheless, the TPU 64D filament has also been tested on Bowden type printers with satisfying results.

The Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament should be stored in dry conditions before, during and after printing in order to ensure a smooth printing process and a satisfying result. The spool can be kept in its original packaging, with a filament drying capsule, or in a vacuum sealed bag. An intelligent filament container can also be used to protect the filament from humidity. During printing, the spool can be placed in the Fiber Three filament drying case or an inline filament dryer. If the Ultrafuse TPU 64D filament absorbs excess moisture (manifested in oozing, bubbles, sizzling and surface imperfections on the part), it should be dried at 70 °C in a hot air dryer or vacuum oven for at least 5 hours.
