ABS 3NTR

3NTR-ABS-WHITE-175-1000

3NTR is a leading Italian manufacturer of industrial grade 3D printers and filaments, with many years of experience in the additive manufacturing market.

One of the materials in their portfolio is the 3NTR ABS filament, available in 9 colors. It is characterized by good surface quality and versatility for general applications, as it can be printed with numerous other polymers to create functional parts as well as glued, painted and sandblasted for a personalized end result. It can be used with breakaway as well as soluble support materials. The 3NTR ABS filament is also compliant (but not certified) with the HB UL94 plastics flammability standard.

ABS is a thermoplastic polymer, one of the most popular 3D printing materials. Together with PLA, it was the first 3D printing material available when additive manufacturing was making its first steps. The name ABS is formed by the words acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, the substances that make ABS. Acrylonitrile gives ABS hardness, rigidity and resistance to chemicals and high temperatures. Butadiene provides endurance in many temperature ranges, which prevents ABS from becoming fragile and brittle in low temperatures. Lastly, the styrene in the composition is responsible for even more rigidity and mechanical strength.

ABS handles outdoor conditions such as rain and wind pretty well, which is why it is often used in parts designed for the outdoors. Since ABS is light and quite affordable to manufacture, it is often used for making prototypes and plastic preview models. Thanks to its resistance to temperature changes, ABS is perfectly recyclable. What’s more, ABS has low heat and electricity conductivity, which is very useful in applications where electrical insulation is needed. ASB can also absorb shock thanks to its great impact resistance.

Today, ABS finds countless uses all across industries, for example in decorative car interior parts, household appliances, computer keyboard components, face guards for wall sockets, power tool housings, plastic tubing, protective headgear, and toys.

ABS is a 3D printing material slightly more difficult to print and prone to warping. The 3NTR 3D printers, which this material is designed for, incorporate a carbon fiber base additivized with glass fiber to provide a highly adherent printing surface without the need for external adhesion improving products.

Should warping occur, it is recommended to use the "raft" or "brim" setting in the slicing software. The "raft" setting creates a first thick layer that works as a support for the actual piece and is quite easy to remove when the print is done. With this option, it is recommended to lower the infill value to lower the amount of heat stored by the piece. The "brim" setting resembles a membrane around the piece and is ideal for printing small parts or parts with a narrow base. It is recommended to never go over 5 mm in brim thickness to avoid the first layer peeling off the printing base.

3D printing tall and thin parts with ABS may result in deformations as the layers may not have enough time to harden. To overcome this obstacle, it is recommended to print 2 or more pieces simultaneously. This way, when the extruder is moving from the first piece to the second after each layer, the ABS will have enough time to harden.
