Glow-in-the-dark resin for the 3D printing of phosphorescent (up to 4 hours) parts

Apart from general use resins, engineering materials and dental photopolymers, Liqcreate offer creative resins in their product portfolio. The Hazard Glow resin is a low odor glow-in-the-dark resin for designed for unique and imaginative resin 3D printing projects, as well as for creative prototyping.

The Hazard Glow resin was designed for SLA and DLP technologies in a range of 385-405nm. This wide light source range encompasses many 3D printers by renowned brands such as Creality, Formlabs, Anycubic, or Phrozen. A full list of resin 3D printers compatible with the Hazard Glow resin is available here.

The Liqcreate Hazard Glow resin is a combination of resin and small particles of chemically modified glow in the dark powder, which is what gives the resin its phosphorescence effect. A similar methodology is used in the manufacturing of glow-in-the-dark filament. When exposed to light (radiation) of a shorter wavelength, a part 3D printed with the Hazard Glow resin will glow up to 4 hours, absorbing the light and reemitting it at a longer wavelength.

The glow-in-the-dark effect of a part 3D printed with the Liqcreate Hazard Glow resin can be activated (and recharged) with almost every light source such as a flashlight or (with an especially intense effect) a UV curing unit or sunlight. This makes the Hazard Glow resin ideal for the 3D printing of not only creative prototypes but also decorative or functional illumination objects to be used outdoors.

The manufacturer provides a detailed guide on how to work with the Hazard Glow resin on the Liqcreate support page. The guide includes tips on the recommended printing parameters as well as the maintenance of the 3D printer when working with the Hazard Glow resin.

The Liqcreate resin bottles should be stored in a clean and dry environment, out of direct sunlight and in a temperature of 5-30 ºC. Before use, the resin bottle should be shaken energetically for at least 1 minute (at least 3 minutes in the case of filled resins). Once shaken, the resin should be left to rest for around 10 minutes to let the air bubble escape. Leftover resin can be poured back into the bottle but it should be first filtered to ensure there is no polymer residue present. Safety equipment such as protective garments, gloves and face protection is highly recommended for the handling of resin.

The post-processing workflow for the Hazard Glow resin is quite user-friendly. First, the 3D printed part has to be cleaned for a maximum of 6 minutes in Liqcreate Resin Cleaner, IPA alcohol or bioethanol, preferably ultrasonic or under agitation. Then the completely dried part has to be cured in a high-power UV curing chamber. The curing workflow is explained in detail by the manufacturer here. It absolutely crucial that the parts are dry before they are cured. The curing of wet or sticky parts will lead to mechanical and surface defects. The drying can be done by simply leaving the cleaned part in a well ventilated area for at least 30 minutes or with the help of pressurized air (2 minutes) for parts cleaned in IPA alcohol or ethanol.

More useful resources such as tips on how to use support structures with the Liqcreate resins, or on how to color, age or mix the resins can be found on the Liqcreate support page.
