Chemically resistant resin for rapid manufacturing and functional prototyping.

Liqcreate Deep Blue is a general purpose 3D printing resin by Liqcreate, a Dutch designer and manufacturer of premium photopolymers for DLP, SLA and LCD/MSLA technologies. Parts 3D printed with the Deep Blue resin are rigid, and demonstrate low shrinkage and high shape retention. These features make the Deep Blue resin ideal for the applications in functional prototyping.

The Deep Blue resin is especially apt for that purpose in the automotive industry thanks to its very high resistance to gasoline and chemicals, as proven by experiments conducted by Liqcreate on 3D printed and cured parts. Once a reference measurement was taken, the parts were immersed for 7 days in water, ethanol, methyl ether, diesel, petrol, bleach, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.

The only significant change was the 20 % drop in the tensile modulus after immersion in water, otherwise all the other values remained very similar to the reference measurement.

Another advantage, shared by all Liqcreate resins, is the fact than the Deep Blue resin can be used on most open material resin 3D printers available on the market, for example printers by brands such as XYZ, Uniz, Phrozen, Creality, Anycubic or Formlabs. This is due to the resin's wide range of compatible light sources (385-405 nm). The manufacturer provides a full list of compatible 3D printers as well as the recommended printing settings.

Parts 3D printed with Liqcreate Deep Blue are characterized by high accuracy, a smooth surface finish, low odor and an aesthetically pleasing translucent blue color. This, combined with the excellent chemical resistance properties, makes the Deep Blue resin the perfect material for rapid manufacturing and prototyping in the industrial and automotive market, especially for parts than have to keep up their mechanical performance during prolonged exposure to hostile chemicals.

The Liqcreate resin bottles should be stored in a clean and dry environment, out of direct sunlight and in a temperature of 5-30 ºC. Before use, the resin bottle should be shaken energetically for at least 1 minute (at least 3 minutes in the case of filled resins). Once shaken, the resin should be left to rest for around 10 minutes to let the air bubble escape. Leftover resin can be poured back into the bottle but it should be first filtered to ensure there is no polymer residue present. Safety equipment such as protective garments, gloves and face protection is highly recommended for the handling of resin.

The post-processing workflow for the Deep Blue resin is quite user-friendly. First, the 3D printed part has to be cleaned for a maximum of 6 minutes in Liqcreate Resin Cleaner, IPA alcohol or bioethanol, preferably ultrasonic or under agitation. Then the completely dried part has to be cured in a high-power UV curing chamber. The curing workflow is explained in detail by the manufacturer here. It absolutely crucial that the parts are dry before they are cured. The curing of wet or sticky parts will lead to mechanical and surface defects. The drying can be done by simply leaving the cleaned part in a well ventilated area for at least 30 minutes or with the help of pressurized air (2 minutes) for parts cleaned in IPA alcohol or ethanol.
