Designed to be detected by a magnetic detector, even in cases where the amount of material is very small.

Within the world of 3D FDM printing, the manufacturer Smart Materials 3D is known for its special ABS, such as ABS Fireproof and ABS Medical, developed with great care thus becoming the leaders in their fields of application. In this case, this Spanish manufacturer presents ABS MDT (thermoplastic magnetically detectable).

As many of the users already know, ABS is the plastic material most used by the industrial sector, especially by the automotive industry and by all those who need light and resistant parts. Within this range of sectors, there are some that need this type of pieces but with a greater peculiarity, which are magnetically detectable. This property is increasingly in demand by the industrial sector and others who must control the contamination of their products in a comprehensive manner.

The ABS MDT fulfills the properties cited above as it is a filament for 3D printing designed to be detected by a magnetic detector, even in cases where the amount of material is very small. One of the reasons why ABS MDT stands out, which is not usual in this type of filament, is because it is detected by all types of metal detectors available in the market, both those that use a permanent magnet and the most current, which work with balanced coils.

To achieve the function of being detected magnetically, ABS MDT does not need to include in its composition toxic elements such as steel fibers or metal powders, not elements that apart from being harmful, wear out the HotEnd as carbon fibers, graphite or carbon black. For this reason, the MDT ABS does not give off dust, particles or fumes to the working atmosphere during printing or contaminates the processes that are carried out with the parts manufactured with this material.

All the above mentioned together with being resistant to humidity (fungi, mold, etc.) and its great dimensional stability make ABS MDT an ideal filament for the industrial sector, a sector that is using technology more every day of 3D printing to make final pieces (tools, containers, etc.). There are also other very interesting applications, such as the manufacture of sensors, smart packaging or any other type of element that needs to be magnetically detectable.

3D printing with ABS filament is a bit more complex than with the PLA filament. In the case of the ABS MDT filament, it's necessary that the printing base is hot, between 80 and 100ºC. In addition, the temperature of the extruder should be between 260 and 280ºC. It should also be remembered that ABS plastic undergoes the phenomenon called "warping", which causes the first layer of the pieces to detach from the base of the 3D printer. So if you are going to print large pieces it's advisable that you use BuildTak, Kapton TapeMagigoo or DimaFix so that the pieces don't tend to detach from the base. To ensure the dimensional stability of the parts it's advisable to use a closed 3D printer.

With ABS MDT it isn't necessary to use reinforced nozzle since this filament has low abrasion. Even so it is recommended to use the Olsson Ruby Nozzle for all advanted materials.
